[B]談友誼[/B]

一般而言，美國人對友情，善意反應比較快，對事情也較提得起、放得下。在人際關係中，至少在表面上，顯得「文明」而「友愛」。

以下把老美在友誼方面的表達方式，略加分類，並舉例句，希望能說明一二。（句中的人稱代名詞和動詞時態，可依需要，隨意改變）

[B](1)交友之道[/B]

(rules of friendship)：

A friend you cannot count on is no friend at all.

（靠不住的朋友，根本就不是朋友。）

Speak well of friends or else don't speak at all.

（說到朋友，就要說好的，否則就別說。）

Make new friends but keep the old; one is silver and the other is gold.

或：Make new friends but keep the old one; new friend is silver and old one is gold.

（要交新朋友，也要保住老朋友；新友是銀，老友是金。）

What are friends for if I can't help?

（假如我不能幫忙，那麼朋友是幹啥用的呢？）

Don't thank me; that is what friends are for.

（不必謝我，這就是朋友的用途啊！）

You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.

（用蜜比用醋能捉到更多的蒼蠅。）

（即溫柔比刻薄更能交到朋友。）

Being nice to friends is better than being hostile.

（對朋友善意總比敵意好。）

（hostile 後面省去 to friends）

Don't try to upstage your friends.

（盡量不要使自己顯得比朋友更突出。）

（upstage = outshine 比…更出色，使相形見絀。）

True friends visit you in prosperity by invitation, but in adversity they come without being asked.

（真朋友是在你得意時受你邀請而來，當你失意時，他們也會不請自來。）

True friendship is so precious it should not be discard-ed lightly.

（真正的友誼是寶貴的，不能輕易放棄。）

（it 指 friendship）

We should look for the good in our friends and compli-ment them.

（我們應該找出朋友的優點，加以誇獎。）

There is give-and-take in all friendships , but it is supposed to be a two-way street.

（所有的友誼都是「施」與「受」的相互關係，也應該是雙方的。）

A one-way friendship will not last too long.

（單方面的友誼，是不會持久的。）

True friends do not show off or put each other down. They build each other up and support each other in time of need.

（真朋友是不會彼此炫耀或貶抑。他們必要時會互相鼓勵和支持。）

Be a buddy, not a bully!

（做個好朋友，不要當惡霸！）

Why be a bully when you can be a friend.

（如能成為朋友，為何要做惡霸呢？）

Take the high road and forgive friends.

（採取正確的途徑去寬恕朋友。）

( high road = right way ; low road = wrong way，也就是反對他人。)

Be absolutely up-front with your friends.

（對朋友，必須開誠布公。）

(up-front = direct and honest)

Try not to pick a bone with your friends.

（盡量不要與你朋友爭辯。）

( pick a bone = argue or debate)

You will not understand your friend's problem until you walk a mile in his/her shoes.

（除非站在朋友的立場， 否則你是無法理解他的問題。）

True friends will listen with their ears and then speak from their hearts.

（真朋友會細心傾聽，真心說出。）

Visiting a friend's home, remember to respect the pri-vacy of your friend and recognize you are a guest.

（到朋友家做客，記得要尊重朋友的隱私，並且了解自己是客人。）

It is impolite to ask your American friend to take off shoes at your home.

（要美國朋友進門脫鞋，是不禮貌的。）

Any gossip will put friendship in jeopardy.

（任何流言蜚語，都會使友誼置於險境。）

Do not ask your American friend's personal questions such as salary , age, house price or car payment, etc.

（不要問美國朋友私人問題，諸如薪水、年齡、房子價格或汽車貸款等。）

Everyone appreciates being complimented, but you need not go overboard.

（每個人都愛被誇獎，但不要誇過頭。誇過頭，就不誠懇了。）

Many Americans respect other's opinion,but do not appreciate being offered unsolicited.

（美國人多半尊重他人意見，但不歡迎未經請求的忠告。）

Friendship should be based on (upon) mutual respect.

（友誼是建立在彼此的尊重上。）

People will be irritated by unannounced friends who pop in without calling first.

（人們厭煩不先告知而登門造訪的朋友。）

Don't be too intimate with your friends because some-times ?珧too thick does not stick.?

（不要與朋友太親密，因為有時「太濕反而黏不住」。）

（如果太好，往往出毛病，似同「君子之交淡如水」。）

Try to avoid discussing politics and religion when so-cializing with friends.

（與朋友相聚，盡量避免談論政治與宗教。）

Two possible ways to strain a friendship are to live to-gether or to borrow money.

（兩種可能會損害友誼：住在一起或借錢。）

When you are a house-guest, you are supposed to fit into the life of your host.

（到別人家做客時，要適應主人的生活方式。）

（即客隨主便。）

Never wear out your welcome as Ben Franklin said,?珧Fish and friends stink in three days.?

（不可在朋友家待得太久而使自己不再受到歡迎，就如富蘭克林所說：「魚和朋友，三天就會發臭。」）

（wear out 與 outstay 或 overstay 意思相似，都是指逗留超過時間。your welcome是指朋友給你的歡迎。）

The six-letter combination for friend is Forgiving , Respect , Inspiration , Ever-lasting , Never-ending and Dedication.

（組成朋友的六個字母是：寬恕、尊敬、鼓舞、永恆、持久和奉獻。）

[B]（2）心腹之交[/B]

（bonds of friendship）：

You always have a special place in my heart.

（你在我心目中，永久佔有特別的位置?N）

He is close to my heart; I love being with him.

（他與我推心置腹，我喜歡與他在一起?N）

（love可用在一般朋友，但若指男女戀愛，則用to be in love with 或 to fall in love with）

Good friends make everyday a celebration.

（在任何情況下朋友始終同甘共苦?N）

All Americans make a distinction between friend and girl (boy) friend.

（美國人把朋友與女友加以區別?N）

(註：friend指一般的友誼；而girl(boy)friend是指男女間深厚的感情，甚至已同居。介紹朋友時，要特別小心?N）

It was great fun having you with us; I cherish your friendship.

（與你在一起很愉快；我珍惜我們的友誼?N）

Your friend is always on your side in this matter.

（對這件事，你的朋友始終站在你這一邊?N）

（上句介詞用on，表示有爭吵時，為你辯護；用by時，則指實際站在你旁邊鼓勵你）

I wish I could help you, but I am not sure how to go about it.

（我真希望能幫助你，但不知如何著手?N）

He is friendly, approachable and easygoing. We al-ways have a good time together.

（他很友善，易於親近，也很隨和；我們在一起都很快樂?N）

To know that you think of me and care for me is a comfort and joy.

(知道您想到我、關心我，讓我感到安慰和喜悅?N)

It is good to invite friends for dinner from time to time.

（有時邀請朋友吃飯，也是滿好的?N）

（from time to time=occasionally）

It is never rude to smile and offer friends a helping hand.

（對朋友帶著笑容和伸出幫忙之手，絕非不好?N）

He tries to fend off these overeager and pushy friends without their feeling slighted.

（他想迴避那些過於熱切和好勝心強的朋友，卻不會讓他們覺得他在冷落他們。）

（fend off = avoid; slighted=ignored）

I am warmed by the outpouring of concern from good friends.

（好友洋溢著關懷，令我窩心?N）

As Chinese and Americans mingle, they become friends and bond with one another.

（由於中美人民的來往，他們成為朋友，結合在一起?N）

I really want to know what is on your mind

because I value your friendship.

（我真想知道你腦子裡在想什麼，因為我很珍惜你的友誼?N）

Your friendship to me is the best thing since sliced bread.

（你對我的友誼，是最特別，最好的?N）

（the best thing since sliced bread是俚語，意思是special 或wonderful）

He is my best friend; he stands by my side all the time.

（他是我最好的朋友；他一直站在我這一邊?N）

（也可以說……he is by my side……）

You are such a gem; you have always been easy to talk to.

（你真難能可貴；總是易於相談，善解人意?N）

You are the glue that holds our group of friends to-gether.

（你就如強力膠，把咱們這群朋友牢牢地黏在一起?N）

He is the one who has always been a pleasure to be around.

（與他在一起，總是快樂的?N）

He makes us feel as if we have known him our whole lives.

Don't be hard on your friends.

（hard 系指 give hard time，或太責難）

He has been a simple honest person who has always treated everyone with friendliness and sincerity.

（他是個老老實實的人，以友愛和至誠對待每個人?N）

He always lets bygones be bygones for the mistakes that friends have made.

（他對朋友過去的錯誤，都是既往不究?N）

If you truly value his friendship, don't keep him in the dark about anything.

（假如你真正珍惜他的友誼，就不要把他蒙在鼓裡?N）

Friend's words have power to hurt or to heal.

（朋友的話語，有傷害也有癒合的力量?N）

I can always count on him for some magic words of advice.

（stumble 是動詞，絆腳的意思?N）

Any friends will be tired of the backbiting and fin-ger-pointing.

（任何朋友都討厭背後誹謗和指名道姓的批評?N）

（動詞時態：backbite, backbit, backbitten; fin-ger-point, finger-pointed, finger-pointed）

They try to stay on a friendly terms with each other.

（他們彼此維持友善的關係?N）

He has a circle of friends with whom he has a lot in common.

（他有一群志同道合的朋友?N）

He has his own circle of friends, but I enjoy my tight group of longtime friends.

（他有一群朋友；但我喜歡與老友常在一起?N）

（tight group 指常在一起的朋友?N）

A true friend is the one who is there for you without an agenda.

（真正的朋友是無條件地幫助你?N）

（agenda 是指 condition 或 hidden purpose）

[B]（3）友誼的疏遠[/B]

（declining friendship）：

He is trying to keep me at a distance.

（他想與我保持距離。）

或：She has been distancing herself from him.

（她正在與他疏遠。）

或：He feels that she has drifted apart from him.

（他覺得她在疏遠他。）

Your friendship is now out of tune ; don't let him walk all over you.

（你們的友誼現在並不和諧，不要讓他盛氣凌人。）

For a friendship to stay healthy, there must be a com-monality of interests.

（要保持友誼正常，必須要有共同的興趣。）

（commonality的意思，就是 something in com-mon）

He has started to drive a wedge between us.

（他在我們之間，開始製造分裂。）

或：His attitude has driven a (huge) wedge into our friendship.

（他的態度，使我們的友誼加大裂痕。）

（wedge 本指三角木；這裡意思是使裂痕變大。）

He just doesn't want to fall back into that old friend-ship.

（他不要再回到過去的友誼。）

He needs to give an explanation for his extended si-lence.

（他需要解釋長期不聯繫的原因。）

They call each other only on an intermittent basis.

（他們只是斷斷續續的聯繫。）

She tries to avoid him ; he cannot get ahold of her.

（她想逃避他；他無法與她聯繫。）

（get ahold of = reach）

Sometimes he really inconveniences her when he pops in unannounced.

（他沒有通知而貿然造訪，有時讓她感到不方便。）

He does not feel as close to you as you feel to him.

（他對你不像你對他那麼親近。）

She will isolate herself and give him the silent treat-ment.

（她想孤立自己，不再理他。）

He failed to hit it off with her.

（他不能與她相處得很好。）

（to hit it off = to get along well）

Their friendship will go down the drain.

（他們的友誼將要完蛋了。）

She wants to write him off and never have any contact with him.

（她要放棄他，不再與他來往。）

to write someone（或something）off 是撤銷或結束。

She has almost come to the point where she doesn't want to see him anymore.

（她幾乎到了不想再看到他的地步。）

Not long after their meeting his friendship with her soured.

（認識不久后，他與她的友誼變壞了。）

（sour這裡是動詞，意思是變酸，惡化= go bad）

When she discovered a malicious streak in him, she turned a deaf ear to what he said.

（當她發現他有惡意的傾向，她就不聽他所說的。）

（turn a deaf ear = turn deaf ears）

He has not heard from her since and he doesn't expect to.

（從那時起，他就沒有她的訊息；他也不期待有。）

（since後面「something happened；」to的後面「hear from her」都被省略）

Now that your life has changed, the bonds of cama-raderie have loosened.

（你的生活改變了，友誼的結合也鬆弛了。）

（camaraderie是法文，意思是同志情誼 = good friendship）

Please tell me if I have done anything to ruin our friendship.

（請告訴我，是否我做了傷及我們友誼的事。）

He has no time for inconsiderate friends, nor fair-weather ones.

（他不喜歡與那些不替別人著想的朋友交往，也不喜歡那些只能同安樂而不能共患難的朋友。）

（have no time for 是討厭或不喜歡；nervy 指占別人便宜的人）

In the beginning he did not show his dark side be-cause he did not want to scare her off.

（開始時，他沒有露出不好的一面，因為他不想把她嚇跑。）

Sometimes a friend who always seems nice to your face may say something cruel behind your back.

（有時朋友在你面前似乎很好，但在你背後，也許說些中傷的話。）

[B]（4）友誼與送禮[/B]

（friendship and gift-giving）：

Many Chinese people hate to visit friends emp-ty-handed.

（許多老中不喜歡空手去看朋友。）

Would it be inappropriate to give an American friend cash （red-envelope）as a gift?

（送紅包給美國朋友當禮物，是不恰當的嗎？）

Would giving cash（money）be considered in poor taste or tacky?

（贈送現鈔，是庸俗或不得體嗎？）

註：以往許多美國人不知道中國人的red-enve-lope是指cash或money的紅包。現在愈來愈多人認為送現鈔、支票或禮券，既省時，又實際；但仍然有人認為送錢是「低品味」。

It would make me happy if you would buy yourself a little something with my check.

（假如你能用我的支票，為你自己買點小東西，我會很高興。）

As long as a gift comes from the heart it does not mat-ter how small it is.

（禮物只要出自衷心，不論多小都沒關係。）

It is the thought that counts.

（最重要的，那是一種心意。）（禮輕情意重）

To avoid suspicion of bribery, many American bosses do not want to accept gifts from employees.

（唯恐被人懷疑收受賄賂，許多美國上司不收員工禮物。）

I sent him a gift, but I expect nothing in return.

（我送他一份禮物，但我不希望他任何的回報。）

I buy gifts within my means ; I do not match gift for gift.

（我買禮物是按自己的經濟能力；不與別人做比較。）

I always accept a friend's gift gracefully and appre-ciatively regardless of its monetary value.

（我都以感恩之心，接受朋友的禮物，不論其價格為何。）

A gift should be given for no other reason than the joy of giving.

（禮物只是贈送的喜悅，而沒有其它的原因。）

或：A gift should be given with no strings attached.

（送禮應該沒有任何附加條件。）

The most meaningful gifts are the ones that come from the heart.

（最有意義的禮物，是來自內心的關愛。）

This gift is merely a token of my deep affection for you.

（這份禮物僅僅是我對你深深關愛的表示。）

Let's not exchange gifts this year and spend time to-gether instead.

（讓咱們今年不交換禮物，大家聚聚就好了。）

I just want to present you with a gift to mark the occa-sion.

（我送你禮物，只是為了紀念這個場合。）

It is not appropriate to do all the giving or all the tak-ing.

（只送禮或只收禮，均非適當。）

To buy a cheap gift for a tycoon will rub him the wrong way.

（買便宜禮物給富翁，會使他不高興。）

to rub someone（up）the wrong way 是激怒某人

（動詞時態：rub, rubbed, rubbing）

（本俚語系來自逆毛撫摸狗貓而激怒）

Do not measure the value of friendship by the type of gift.

（不要以禮物的類別，去衡量友誼的價值。）

Giving or accepting a gift should not create any obli-gation.

（贈送禮物，或接受禮物，不可產生任何的責任或義務。）

Do not compete with one another in the area of gift-giving.

（送禮方面，不必彼此競賽。）

In reality the best gift you can give is yourself and your love.

（實際上，最好的禮物是你自己和你的愛心。）（全文完）

頂頭上司大衛奸詐狡猾，經常把屬下的優良成果，據為己有。同事們好像暗地裡稱他為「wise guy」（聰明的傢伙）。我深不以為然。因為比起上任的上司，他幾乎是蠢透了。

有一次，我與他閑談時，無意間說道：「同事們都說你是 wise guy...」沒想到，頓時，他臉色鐵青，居然拂袖而去……。

後來我才知道，wise guy是指自認為聰明而喜歡炫耀的「蠢」蛋，與wise man（聰明人）的意義大不相同。

公司附近開了一家專賣小熊造型的禮品店，店名叫「Mad About Bears」。

我問店老闆：「美國人喜歡熊，許多人瘋狂的收集玩具熊或裝飾品，為什麼你的店名要人『對熊生氣』？」

老闆微微笑：「Mad About 是著迷、狂熱的意思，我們要人『對熊著迷』，才有生意做啊！」

許多足球迷 mad about football，也就是 crazy about football，被足球迷冷落的太太或女友，可能就會 mad at football！

參加一個講習會，主講人在結訓前，要全體參與者每兩人一組，共同完成一個指定的計畫。與我同組的Don很熱切的對我說：We must hang together to finish this project。

聽了他的話后，我立即閃到一邊，與他保持距離，沒好氣的回應：男女授受不親，我才不要和你 hang together。

他聽后，笑得人仰馬翻。在旁的Beth知道我會錯意了，便加以解釋：hang together意為「團結一致」才能把交派的任務完成。（姜若美）

或因溫室效應，天候寒熱失時，清明未至，已然炎暑，仕女競換夏裝。前不久街頭閑逛，途遇玉環型女士，體態豐盈，羅衫輕裘，左右乳蒂，凸顯胸前，大有脫穎之勢。老友傑克輕聲對我說：「Look at that lady. She is a peanut smuggler。」

怎麼看，她是花生走私客？花生這樣便宜，何用走私？觸犯法條，得不償失。當時雖心存疑惑，但未求甚解。

周末女兒回家探望，帶來的蔬果中，有塑料袋裝帶殼花生一袋。袋內花生，紛紛突出。宛如日前在街頭所見情景，頓悟之餘，不禁啞然失笑。深感美國俚語，謔而不虐，滑稽突梯，入木三分！（張啟漢）

有一天，我和四個老友開車去看電影，四個老美都是彪形大漢，只有我一個老中體形瘦小。開車的傑克說：「Peter , you've got to sit bitch.」。

我心想 bitch 原是個不太乾淨的字，用在這裡究竟是什麼意思？傑克見我一臉茫然，連忙加上一句：「You have got to sit in between.（你要坐後座的中間位。）」

午餐后，同事Wendy氣憤地回座位，我問她什麼事？她說： 「I had beef with my boyfriend.」

我問：「是否牛肉有問題？」 她笑哈哈地告訴我：「不是牛肉有問題，是我與男友有問題。」

原來 beef 在這裡解釋為「有問題」之意。

Gruelling Day

丈夫的來信說：「We had a gruelling day, but…」我看后立刻去查生字，字典上說 gru-elling 是俗語表示嚴罰、嚴懲的意思。

想到他那些阿拉伯客戶的財大氣粗，我就以同理心回了一信，說是不是他們對西方人有偏見，才對你們「嚴峻」啊？丈夫的回信教我大吃一驚，原來 gruelling 在此當作 hard work 解；是說他老兄苦幹了一天。

幸好有澄清的機會，否則誤解更要加深偏見了。不可不慎啊！

Run Into

義工隊友珍興沖沖地告訴我， 有一天她「ran into」我們都認識、卻好久不見的好朋友蘇珊。我當時第一個反應是，他們都是上了年紀的老太太了，怎麼還像小孩一樣地「莽撞入懷」。

看到我愣愣的，珍又重複一遍：「我在百貨公司遇到蘇珊了…」我腦筋急轉彎，才想到：ran into當是不期而遇、碰到的意思吧。英文俗語可是不能聽字生義的啊。

Ｐotty

剛來美國不久，晚上去上英語課。一天，老師讓我們自己先練習寫短文，她要去 「potty」。我聽成「party」，就嘴快地說： 「我剛才進大門時，看見學校 cafeteria里很多人，你是去參加那裡的 party 嗎？」眾人大笑，我一臉茫然。

旁邊一位同學才說：「老師要去上廁所，不是去參加晚會。這個 potty 不是那個 party。」原來如此，我過去從未聽說過這個詞。

美國真的是有意思，一些詞語都修飾得這麼動聽，管廁所叫 restroom（休息室），不像法國人那麼直接叫 toilet（馬桶）；地鐵叫 subway，不像英國人那麼直接就叫 underground（地下）。

嗯..... 是有不同的說法....

又學到不少

一天，我們乘經理Wayne的車外出午餐，去一家位於購物中心附近的中國餐館，並將汽車停放在一個很大停車場內。午餐以後，我們回到車上。Wayne發動汽車以後，我們開始談論今天餐館食物的味道。
在Wayne快將汽車開出停車場之前，他突然問我們：「Do you want a donut?」我當時想：剛吃過飯，誰還能吃下甜甜圈。忙回答：「We can save it for tomorrow morn-ing」。（我們明早吃）。

我剛說完，美國同事就笑起來了。

我正百思不解時，Wayne解釋說，在美國有些剛會開車的高中生和剛進大學的學生，喜歡開車在停車場繞圈子，他們把繞圈子叫做「donut」。我這才恍然大悟。（歌川）

陪 April 逛骨董店，看見一個青花釉里紅大花瓶，手繪的纏枝圖案，非常細緻高雅。曾在陶瓷公司任職多年的我，以識貨者的身分告訴同伴，這個花瓶一定很值錢。April 好奇的看著標價說：「It costs a pretty penny。」我大吃一驚，前往查個究竟，然後質問她：「明明標的是1萬2000元，為什麼你說花瓶只值a pretty penny？」

她知道我誤會其意，立即向我解釋，a pretty penny 的意思是指巨額的金錢。

很高興學到一句新俚語。penny前面加上字，成為「a pretty penny」，其身價便暴漲，真不可思議！（姜若美）

上學期最後一堂課，老師報告分數，同學們的成績有好也有壞。下課時老師向大家揮手說：「All the best。」

怎麼「大家都是最好」呢？原來，all the best意為「萬事如意」。與朋友告別時可以用，寫信結尾時可以用，雙方舉杯時也可以用這句詞來祝賀。（江詩群）
