Thanks, Adelyn, but

Do you, or anybody else, know what's the English equivalent to that?

Like to 新官上任三把火, there is "a new broom sweeps clean."

Thank you again.

hi Mythologist,

the English versions of 樹欲靜而風不止 quoted earlier are all translations but that of 新官上任三把火 is an idiom. for the translations of the latter, i have the following which can be found in Yahoo! Dictionary, Hong Kong.

新官上任三把火 A new official applies strict measures.

when only translations are available, there will be no "equivalent" to the original. this is because these translations can have subtle differences in meaning, and only you know the context where the phrase is to be placed. you must  apply your own rules to determine which version best fits your needs.

From what I understand, usually it is hard to have a unique way of interpreting what is said in Chinese into English or an English equivalent of a Chinese proverb, and vice verse. What we can do is to find the best fit for what we are trying to say.

樹欲靜而風不止

the official english version is "the tree may prefer calm, but the wind will not subside-- class struggle is inevitable in class society." as it can be seen here, the proverbial part serves a purpose in the context.

for the full chinese sentence "樹欲靜而風不止,子欲養而親不待也", i have tried and got two versions: (1) the tree has a desire to remain quiet but the wind will not rest. the son has a plan to perform his duties but the parents cannot await. (2) a quiet tree becomes regretful of the wind that is restless and a dutiful son becomes regretful of the time that has passed away.

i am not sure the translations are faithful to the original chinese, especially for the second version. [:465:]

Thank you very much everybody.

I guess there is no English equivalent to that one.

By the way, I'm interested in finding English counterparts of Chinese proverbs, idioms,  sayings and etc.

Please add to the list, if you know any.

新官上任三把火----- a new broom sweeps clean
世上無難事,只怕有心人-----where there is a will there is a way
種瓜得瓜,種豆得豆-----as you brew, so shall you drink
一遭被蛇咬,十年怕井繩-----a burnt child dreads the fire
酒後吐真言-----drunkards tell the truth

All being said, can I say "曾經滄海難為水," roughly means: been there, done that?

Thanks again.

The one upstairs is pretty good. I am sure there is a similar expression in English, but I could not think of one right now.
I will try another literal translation: The tree wants to remain calm/unruffled, but the wind won't let it. (or "the wind would not give it the satisfaction.")

樹欲靜而風不止,子欲養而親不待也"the tree may prefer calm, but the wind will not subside" for the first sentence is classic; the second sentence is for our Chinese traditional culture only; western culture has no equivante concept here. you have to use your own wisdom to develop it.

re:collection of English equivalents.
Several years ago I painstakely made a collection, and added to it some of my own interpretations and translations. I put them up in a web site, only to find recently that www.51educate.com has copied it and put themselves down as the source. Three notes to their administrator produced no response. It is very frustrating putting up original materials. Another incident is the 1910 translation of the Sanzijang by Herbert Giles. I made a transcript of that and put it up on the website, some people copied it, typo and all (that's how I identified it) and put their names down as the "translator."
Anyway, ranting aside, here is my old collection (I have second thoughts in some of my interpretations, but it is too big a job to redo the whole list.) This
http://users.openface.ca/~dstephen/ew.htm#phrases (This is the older version, done in 1999)
This page (the one copied by 51educate), has not been updated since 2002
the son has a plan to perform his duties but the parents cannot await.
Just a minor suggestion:
"await" is a transitive verb, but there's no object in your sentence. "wait" is recommended.
"await" has an intransitive meaning, but is rarely used.
