i am not sure but i just have that feeling. i suspect that the Chinese Youth Net has made a mistake. the "four big misunderstandings" in the title of this article can be caused by a bigger misunderstanding by the author.
1) for instance, the scottish english has a variant called scots. remember the song 友誼地久天長? the original title is "auld lang syne" which is scots, meaning "the good old times". scots is a dialect of scottish english and is often treated as independent. click here to read more about scots. we all know how different classic chinese is from putonghua (mandarin), the language we now use daily. how many people still can read and write classic chinese? none? that's right. do we care about it? no. why? it's useless, nearly.
2) there is one version of english language that is used internationally by people conducting businesses of various kinds. it is called standard english by some. the standard english is needed for the world as much as "putonghua" is needed for our country. it is simply because we have got too many different dialects and the result sucks.
3) it may be sufficient for some of us to speak mediocre english. but that doesn't prevent the rest of us from acquiring the ability to express ourselves clearly for important issues at critical moments. again, think of those business people who are nearly illiterate or very under-educated. yes, that can be a good reason why the gangsters have developed their own languages. essentially, we will have to make a choice between speaking english or speaking slang. if we choose to speak slang, we may end up sounding no better than a gangster in business as we can see from many movies. and the dialect we use will happen to be one called chinglish. i am not kidding. it's possible. just think how similar these different "dialects" are in functionality.
4) as for which language will dominate the internet ten years or a hundred years into the future, i would say i am not a gambler. i will not place a bet on this. if i have to, i will put down one dollar, no more. it's all it worths.
a random thought before the internatioal children's day.
