the day before yesterday I bought a fancy toy for my boy, but I had no idea about it. so I asked the shopgirl:" how old boy is it for?".  I felt a little strange! however I could not pick out any proper word to express it.

i have the same feeling when i read your questions. for the toy's one, i would ask "what is the suitable/recommended age for...". actually, i had only the word "age" in mind at the time. the word for the second question is "last" (and "life-time" appeared later and i would say it only to tech support guys over the phone). it is best to forget about chinese at all. but i can't do it.
