Dust,
As a parent, you have done a great job of keeping your children speaking 100% Chinese. We have been trying, but unsuccessful. My elder son used to speak perfect mandarin before kindergarten. After his younger brother started going to school with him, things have been changed. They have been getting harder and harder to communicate with us in mandarin since they talk to each other and others in English in most time. Their friends including a few Chinese kids born in the States don』t speak Chinese, so they excuse themselves not to speak the language for granted. Although as parents, we have completely stopped speaking English at home, they always get their ideas cross over to us in English because they know we are good enough to understand every single word they say in English. Most importantly, we have never forced them much to speak in Chinese. Like what you said, we are not expecting our children to write and read as we do, we just hope they can be a kind of bilingual. |
