回顧Norman Brown的成長過程，舉家遷居肯薩斯后，就在Norman八歲時，他接觸到吉米．漢醉克斯便決定往後要靠吉他吃飯；受父親影響接觸到衛斯．蒙哥馬利之後又將興趣轉向爵士樂。高中畢業后Norman前往洛杉磯的Musician's Institute鑽研音樂同時也開始組團在俱樂部里表演。接下來九○年代Norman Brown加入Motown唱片開始發行專輯，『Just Between Us』、『After The Storm』、『Better Days Ahead』都是這時期的作品。加入華納唱片后則陸續推出『Celebration』、『Just Chillin'』以及最新的這張『West Coast Coolin'』。
爵士樂在四○年代末到五○年代初由邁爾．戴維斯等人以小編製的重奏型態灌制出許多冷靜作風的樂曲，於是爵士樂的沿革進入了『酷派爵士』(Cool Jazz)時期，這時期的樂手以冷靜甚至漠視的態度面對聽者，樂曲上則避免使用尖銳的聲音和顫音是為特色。六○年代的西海岸樂派(West Coast)即是循著此一特色發展出的爵士支線。
由Norman Brown新專輯的標題『West Coast Coolin'』看來，歌曲風格不脫上述的樂風。傳承衛斯．蒙哥馬利與喬治．班森灑脫的吉他彈奏法，Norman Brown的歌曲始終讓人有舒適、羅曼蒂克的感覺。新專輯10首歌除馬文．蓋唱紅的 "What's Going On" 外，都是全新的創作。不論是標題曲或 "Up 'N' At 'Em" 、 "Missing You" 到 "Remember The Time" ，Norman吉他表現一如往常般寫意與自在。Norman也以班森那著名的吟唱方式在幾首歌中獻唱，唯一較不同的是 "I Might" ，編曲與演唱走的都是節奏藍調路線。綜觀整張專輯Norman Brown再次提供了都會爵士的輕鬆樂音。
