It is an early summer morning. The air is calm from last night』s torrential rain. From the distance comes the sound of a rooster crowing, a dog barking. The songs of birds and insects and the calls of artisans selling their wares cut through the stillness of the mountain village. The fragrant green grass mixes with the smell of rice and earth, giving off a pleasant scent. For people, the aroma soothes the senses; in this moment, the land is filled with vitality and enchantment.

But Qian Jin has no time to appreciate the beauty of the morning. His eyebrows furrow as he gazes into the distance. Under foot, the crops are weakened from last night』s violent storm. He doesn』t know what this year』s harvest will bring, or what changes will this pitiful plot of land bring to his family...

He thought about finding work as a migrant to the city, but he knew his family simply would not allow him to leave. He knew what they worried about; because he had no education and no technical skills, he would be like all of the other poor villagers who were only able to find work in construction, where the work was strenuous and exhausting, or else as miners in the coal mines. But this kind of work often resulted in injuries from accidents, a thought that made the families tremble with fear. It was not that the workers didn』t understand the dangerous nature of the job, but with two or three months of this kind of work they could earn enough support their families for a year. When you are poor life is less valuable. If they had the means, no one would still be willing to leave their families and travel far away for backbreaking work just to earn a little money.
