It comes again that Ms Ocean Heart missed an English version of the nice article that she found and took home. This English version was buried deep in an underground place in the wild, wild internet that only those who have a hacker's search engine called "Sesame, Open! (芝麻開門)" could fetch it. Fortunately, I have upgraded my browser to Alibaba (阿里巴巴), which hit a Bingo to find the article "About Chinese set phrases" (漫談成語的翻譯) on its first adventure into the dark world. This time, it brings back the English version of "學外語的五大忌諱" which I include below:

The Five Big Mistakes to Be Avoided in Learning a Foreign Language
I. Overly emphasize the importance of grammatical rules and technical tricks and be unwilling to conduct a painstaking study. Language use is an ability that cannot be acquired simply by learning the technical tricks. Paying too much attention to rules and tricks would make less time available for studying the essence of the subject matter, resulting in ineffectiveness.
For example, a young man subscribed to over a dozen magazines about self-studying and exam preparation and went over all the materials many times so that he could tell every detail. But he still failed each college entrance exam (for the equally qualified) he attended. He paid too much attention to the rules and tricks and spent too little time on the rich contents of the subject matter. More, this was developed into a habit that he became opportunistic and unwilling to work hard. Rules and tricks should be used with caution and they would not be really useful unless they are the distillation of one's own practice and experience.
II. Overly stress the efficacy of learning while unwilling to review to familiarize with the old materials. Language use is an ability which can only be improved by practicing. Only unceasing practice can help one become proficient and ultimately develop the ability into a second nature.
III. "Go fishing three days and dry the nets for two days." It describes an attitude lacking perseverance and persistence in studying. Achieving proficiency is a time consuming process. During this process, various difficulties will arise but one should not bow to them. Rather, one should take an unremitting attitude towards these difficulties and practice unceasingly.
IV. Pay insufficient attention to listening comprehension training. Language is about voice making and it is the voice that impacts our brains. If one does not practice to improve his listening ability, but only silently read and rememorize, then, he will not be able to understand others' speaking, nor will he be able to read well.
V. Study without using. Language use is a practical skill. If one studies a language without using it, he will never be able to master it. We learn a language in order to use it. We need to learn how to perfect our skills by practicing. This will help us maintain a high attitude towards learning which in turn will facilitate the learning.
