There is more than one version on the genesis of this word. The one I know is as follows:
Back to mediaeval time, if lovers, who were from noble background, wanted to have sex before they got married, they would have to ask for the permission from the King before they got down to the business.
The word FUCK is therefore the short form for: Fornication Under the Consent of King.
I am that that would be the only civilised bit of this vulgar word, especially considering the way it is used in modern English.
Interestingly, the word FUCK is not the only example where a seemingly simple word is actually the short form for a longer phrase. Here are some more:
1. GOLF C Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden
This has an obvious reflection on sex discrimination back to the old days, especially typical when it comes to some traditional sports.
Nowadays, ladies are allowed to take part. Nevertheless, a hint of gender discrimination can, unfortunately, still be found in the sense that ladies are expected to wear a skirt rather than trousers as do their male counterparts.
Quite some time ago, I read in a newspaper that a lady who coached golf players at a golf club got the axe over the row of her dressing code with her bosses.
I am not quite sure if the rules have been changed. That may, I am , take some more time. Anyway, if you are, at any rate, a feminist, please don't be too quick to take offence.
2. BMW C Black Men』s Wheel / Be My Wife
I first knew the other translation for this word was when I was reading <The Lady Killer> by Martina Cole, one of her bestsellers.
In the novel, the ringleader of the gang, a black, owned a BMW. And it was known in the streets that black men usually would have a BMW, because they interpreted the word as the short form for: Black Men's Wheel.
I got the other version of the source of this word when I was talking about the above-mentioned novel with my colleagues at my part-time work place. One of them suggested that the word could also be expanded as: Be My Wife.
I personally like the latter version, which, more or less, gives a tinge of romance rather than the blood shedding and murders in the violent streets.
3. NIPPLE C Northern Island Professional People Living in England
This was from my former ACCA tutor who taught me one of the last three papers, Mr. Michael Mainwaring.
He used to tell us this kind of laughable things, which themselves suggested the sharp mind of his, in order to keep us awake in the classroom - so he said. I really miss the man, whose knowledge I am always feeling jealous of.
This short article shall only serve as something which whets your appetite for more. There are simply too many of them, and this is by no means an exhaustive list.
If your interest has really been provoked, and you do want to know more about them, you can go to www.google.com to quench your thirst a bit.
A tip for the words to be keyed in: try 「the genesis of English Words」, 「the source of English words」, or something along the line.
Good luck.
P.S. If you know some others, please let me know. Many thanks. |
