Takajo (boys)

Located in Naples, Maine, this camp is operated by the same folks who run Tripp Lake Camp for girls. About 390 boys from the end of first to ninth grade are divided into groups of three and participate in a range of team activities as well as individual sports and hobbies such as golf, tennis, archery, videography, woodworking, pioneering and rock climbing. The staff's
return rate is 100% for the last 15 years.

Tripp Lake Camp (girls)
Tuition $10,400

Tripp Lake Camp sits on 260 acres, including shore-front in Poland, Maine. Uniformed campers aged 8 to 16 are divided into seven groups by age and participate in a wide range of activities from tennis, canoeing and sailing to theater, archery and rock climbing. It is owned by the same family that owns and runs all-boys camp Takajo about 15 minutes away.

Camp Laurel (coed)
Tuition $10,300,

plus $150 laundry service, $400-$450 trip and personal expenses, $800 for extended trips for eighth and ninth graders, and $900 for optional equestrian program.Set on 160 acres in Readfield, Maine, on three-mile long Echo Lake in what the camp's website calls an area "famous for warm, sunny days and comfortable nights," Laurel is summer home to 240 boys and 240 girls, ages 7 to 15, from all over the United States. It has six campuses, three for boys and three for girls. Special events include bumper tubing, carnival day, Halloween in July and trips to the beach. They have a new outdoor roller hockey arena, fleets of sailboats, and they replace their MasterCraft ski boats every
three years.

Raquette Lake (girls)
Tuition $10,200 plus $550 canteen charge
The girl's camp, for roughly 250 girls aged 6 to 15, is in New York's Adirondacks. A boy's camp owned by the same family with the same name is across the lake. Tennis is emphasized--the girls play every day, taught by Davis Cup-level pros. Fourteen-year-olds take a mandatory five-day, 80-mile canoe trip to Saranac Lake, rain or shine. Girls with their own horses can board them for the season. (Raquette Lake boys can bring their horses, too). The camp draws
kids from 18 countries and 20 states.

Vega (girls only)
Tuition $10,200

Set on Echo Lake in Maine across from Laurel, Vega offers a variety of traditional sports, adventure and arts programs for girls aged 7 through 15. Like many of the girls-only camps, a uniform is required, ostensibly to cut down on competition. Friendship building features prominently in the program. A weekly "sunset circle" around a bonfire lets campers take their turn at public speaking. Younger campers get a visit from Varna the Vanishing Varnish
Queen of Vega, aka, the camp's version of the tooth fairy, as warranted.

Wildwood (boys)
Tuition $10,000 plus additional fees for trips

Set in the forest in Bridgton, Maine, campers aged 7 to 15 inhabit cabins overlooking Woods Pond. It is smaller than some other camps, with 180 to 210 boys attending any one season. Apart from the traditional team and individual sports activities and adventure activities, some campers take part in three big trips, including whitewater rafting and journeys to Quebec and Montreal. Facilities include multiple playing fields, a BMX bike track, eight outdoor
Har-Tru tennis courts and three indoor courts, and a 50-foot, six-sided
climbing wall.

Timber Lake (coed)
Tuition $9,950 and a no-tipping policy

Timber Lake has two campuses; one for boys and one for girls, with campers ranging from 7 through 16 years old. It is located in New York's Catskill Mountains on 500 acres with two private spring-fed lakes. Director Jay Jacobs says the camp focuses on character development and building friendship through a variety of traditional sports and adventure activities.

Tyler Hill (coed)
Tuition $9,950

Owned by the same camp operator as Timberlake, it has two campuses, one for boys and one for girls. The difference is it is located in Wayne County, Pa., on a 220-acre campus with two lakes, a professional nine-hole golf course and 12 tennis courts.

Brant Lake (boys)
Tuition $9,880 plus a senior camp trip allowance of $490

The camp has been run for 94 years by the same family. It's located on a 6-mile long lake in the Adirondack Mountains, and basketball and tennis are especially popular sports with campers. About 330 boys are divided into three roughly equal groups by age, and coaches and counselors are dedicated to each age group as opposed to by sport or activity.

Walt Whitman (coed)
Full season: $9,750 with additional $300 fee for optional individual intensive instruction in golf, tennis or water-skiing. July only: $6,400; August: $4,900.

Run by the third generation of the same family, Whitman prides itself on the 90% return rate of its campers and the large number of siblings--90 sets out of about 300 campers divided evenly between boys and girls. It's based in Piermont, N.H., on Lake Armington in the White Mountains.

Starlight (coed)
Tuition is $9,500 plus $250 to cover day-trip admissions, sundries, canteen, movies, etc.

Starlight is located in mountainous Starlight, Pa., on a 385-acre campus that houses separate boys and girls facilities. A program encouraging brother and sister siblings to dine together and spend evening movies and other activities attracts families with siblings. It is at capacity with 540 campers for the seven-week program. A special program for 16-year-old campers, who are called counselor assistants, takes them on a tour of East and West Coast
colleges, including Stanford and USC.

KenWood KenMont (four weeks only)
$6,400

KenMont and KenWood Camps are located in Kent, Conn., on North Spectacle Lake, at the foothills of the Southern Berkshire Mountains. KenMont is for boys and KenWood for girls. They run pretty much separately but join together for events like 4th of July fireworks, theater performances and socials.

Laurel South (four weeks only)
$6,100 plus $200 for day trips and optional $375 for equestrianLaurel South is near Portland, Maine, in the Sebago Lakes Region. The grounds have 150 acres of woodlands, sports fields and open lawns, including 2,500 feet of private shoreline and sandy beach along Crescent Lake. Its campers come from 19 states, but a big contingent (45 out of 400 campers) comes from the Los Angeles area.
