Saturday, November 5, was Bank Transfer Day - a protest movement urging consumers to move away from large banks and into smaller community banks and credit unions.
The national campaign was sparked by a Facebook post by Kristin Christian, when she found out about Bank of America's plan to impose a new fee. She complained to her friends and suggested others also abandon "too big to fail" banks.
Occupy Santa Barbara is on board with the movement, and credit unions are seeing a dramatic rise in customers.
"Last month was huge," Eric Shapiro, Branch Operations Manager of Goleta's Golden1 Credit Union, commented. "We actually saw a 25% increase in our member base company-wide, just in October."
