人民日報海外版去年一月登出《加拿大鐵路華工用生命鋪軌》一文,介紹1878年開始修建的加拿大太平洋鐵路。該文說:「據記載,每修一英里鐵路死一名華工」。
折算下來,每公里死亡華工約0.6人。
將近100年後,中國於1970年建成了成都到昆明的鐵路。這條鐵路沿線處處可見埋葬死亡民工的墓地。有人統計后的結果是「2100名建設者永遠長眠在了1080公里鐵路沿線」。
平均算下來,每公里約死亡兩個華人。死亡率是加拿大那條「血淚華工鐵路」的三倍多。社會主義中國里華工的待遇還不如百年前的加拿大華工。不是嗎?

A navvy received between $1 and $2.50 per day, but had to pay for his own food, clothing, transportation to the job site, mail, and medical care. After two and a half months of back-breaking labour, they could net as little as $16. Chinese navvies in British Columbia made only between $0.75 and $1.25 a day, not including expenses, leaving barely anything to send home. They did the most dangerous construction jobs, such as working with explosives. The families of the Chinese who were killed received no compensation, or even notification of loss of life. Many of the men who survived did not have enough money to return to their families in China.
