爸爸的話：我們一家的故事

    我來給大家講一個小故事，不過它與我的兩個女兒無關，故事是這樣的：
    很久很久以前， 在美國的一所大學中有一名中國學生，她想找一位母語為英語的同學幫她看看自己的論文，修改明顯的語法錯誤。那位同學不在，而當時宿舍的另一個同學很快出去了。第三個室友來了以後，他非常高興地同意幫她檢查論文，他被文章的內容深深打動了。後來發生了一連串事情，幾個月後他們幸福地結婚了。最後，在他們的第二個孩子出生后，這名男子終於寫完了長達300多頁的論文，獲得了博士學位。之後，他一邊開始博士后研究一邊找工作，幾個月後，他找到了一份工作，全家搬往北方。

    白天，孩子的媽媽鼓勵她們畫畫、寫作，晚上，爸爸就給她們講故事。她們還學電腦，例如，Learning 公司出品的聰明兔CD。孩子們的父母沒有縱容孩子熱忠於電子遊戲，而是限制她們玩遊戲的時間，因為有些遊戲完全是娛樂性的，沒有任何教育意義。一段時間以後，孩子們已經能讀會寫了，還會做學校的算術題，但是沒有為她們開設的學校。幸運的是，她們的母親知道自己應該怎麼做，而不是打算怎樣做。孩子們沒有在一般的小學就讀，而是進入了一所開設家庭－學校課程的學校！除了在家接受教育外，孩子們還能上藝術課和音樂課，還會獲得家庭輔導。

    父親工作期間，孩子們就由不同的家庭教師進行輔導，這些家庭教師是孩子們的媽媽安排的，他們有的是高中生，有的是大學生。很快，這位媽媽又從鄰居及鄰近的社區帶來了幾個孩子，共同分擔輔導老師和教師的費用。他們的車庫被改造成了一間教室，在學年中下午上課，夏天則全天上課。星期天還有中文課程，有時爸爸也去聽課，但是沒什麼進步，無非是會說「你好，」「我不知道，」「我喜歡冰激凌」之類的幾句話。

    在此期間，實際上迄今為止有三種外出其樂無窮，即，去圖書館，去書店，去餐館。幸運的是，在家庭學校里就有一個圖書館，還有一個圖書館只距離幾個街區。有時，我們會走的遠點兒去個大點兒的圖書館，大概一個月一次吧。兩個女兒都讀了很多書，尤其是小女兒。 毫無疑問，買的書讀的書比吃飯的盤子還多！

    為了離父親上班的地方近一些，全家搬到了一個新的小鎮，住進了一所新房子。這裡在步行距離之內沒有家庭學校課程，需要重新設立補習班及暑期學習班。附近有座圖書館步行可達，還有幾家書店。補習班及暑期學習班終於成立了，但是最初開設的課程不是很多。有一天，孩子的媽媽發現爸爸工作的單位有人出售筆記本電腦，於是她就買了回來。最小的女兒很快發現了，不僅是文字處理，而且各種字體及效果的變換令她著迷，她很快迷上了寫作，儘管幾個月後，她的父母意識到她的寫作才能。至於故事的其他部分，本書已經作了闡述。很高興地告訴大家，從此以後，這家人過著幸福的生活。

    下面說說我對一些問題的看法：

    關於娶中國女孩

    在美國，（不同種族、宗教和/或文化）通婚司空見慣，過去的偏見已經大大減弱。正如並非只有一種美國男子一樣，並非只有一種中國女子（並非所有的美國男子都很相似，也並非所有的中國女子都如出一轍），幸運的是，我們找到了彼此。中國一向重視教育，鄒燦來自中國，我們在許多問題上有著同樣的看法，對待教育是其中之一。

    我們兩個都是崇尚獨立的人，甚至到了超出常規的程度。在撫養孩子的過程中很有用處，孩子們也常常有不合常規之舉（當然是在好的方面）。我們兩個人，尤其是鄒燦，讀了大量有關教育孩子的書。她曾經照顧過小孩，她同孩子交流的方式深深打動了我。她一直以來在相互尊重的基礎上同孩子保持著和諧的關係。

    關於不要小看自己的孩子

    我記得年輕的時候讀過一本有關兒童心理學的書，當時想這肯定不是一位將自己的童年忘得一乾二淨，對孩子以及孩子的能力一無所知的老人的著作。我下定決心集注這種感覺，成年以後，我努力使自己不要小看孩子。

    我覺得有時我們對孩子的期望實在是太低了，他們不得不努力屈就滿足這些期望。我很受不了聽到有些人用「小兒語」同他們的孩子交談 ——他們的期望是會自我實現的。當然，如果他們像對待嬰兒一樣對待自己的孩子，他們長大後會表現的像個孩子。同樣，正如你認為的那樣，叫喊以及父母身上其他劇烈的感情宣洩會在孩子的行為中反映出來。孩子們在很小的時候就具備了出色的正常談話的能力。即使他們沒有做好充分的準備加入其中，身處其中是學習的第一步。

    關於作為一名成功的父親

    如果孩子們比我成功，而且他們根本就不依賴我，我會覺得自己是一個成功的父親。他們可以開心地獨立做事越早，我的教育工作就做的越好。我看到過一些父母，他們希望給孩子更多的學習機會，從而過度地迎合孩子的需要，使得他們的孩子永遠不會真正長大。他們終生都在等待，作為成年人他們一無是處。我認為這樣不是稱職的監護人，也不是充滿愛心的父母。

    作為父母你可以做的最重要的事情是以身作則，這比幾個小時的說教更有影響力——身教給孩子的影響比言傳大得多。孩子小時候每天給他們讀書還不夠（儘管非常重要！），他們還得看到你在讀書而不是看電視。

    奇奇談政治、媒體和社會

    鄒燦：政治意味著什麼？

    奇奇：對我來說，政治就是許多激烈的討論和單調乏味的演說。政治也也會成為是戰爭和衝突的根源。     

    鄒燦：你希望有一天參與政治嗎？

    奇奇：我可不希望在公共場合被一群荷槍實彈的保鏢包圍。但是，我想只是投票選舉 美國總統不會有害。   

    鄒燦：你認為戰爭的原因是什麼？

    奇奇：我想戰爭可以分為三類——宗教、政治或者單純因貪慾而起。認為人們不再是如此頻繁地尋求復仇，家族爭鬥不會持續幾個世紀。   

    鄒燦：如果你有權力選擇最高法院法官，你會怎樣作出決定？

    奇奇：選擇三個民主黨成員，三個共和黨成員，三個中立的成員。三加三等於六，一共是九，對嗎？

    鄒燦：你怎樣看待媒體的重要性？

    奇奇：媒體對周圍人們的想法影響很大。你也許永遠想不到在每天的報紙、新聞中存在宣傳。   

    鄒燦：如果你負責電視節目製作，你會製作什麼樣的節目？

    奇奇：為家庭錄製介紹歷史遺志的旅遊節目，以天才兒童、教育計劃和日常主題為特色的談話節目。     

    鄒燦：站在聚光燈下你有什麼感受？受到批評家和公眾的密切關注你有什麼憂慮？

    奇奇：在聚光燈下從來沒有讓我覺得煩惱，節目開始前我會有點兒緊張，但是，一旦進入節目，我就感覺很隨意，很自在了。對於第二個問題，我覺得讀那些批評家的文章很有意思。   

    鄒燦：如果你有一天成名，你打算怎樣利用自己的聲名？

    奇奇：為慈善事業捐款（另外我也許會每個季度組織幾次節日）。我會儘力改善全國的教育體制，讓美國兒童長大后成為學識淵博、聰明智慧的人。

    鄒燦：你對當今的美國社會有什麼看法？

    奇奇：我認為如果我們希望美國的孩子長大后成為受過良好教育、見多識廣的人，就應該改善我們的教育體制。許多無家可歸的人和窮人是那些沒有受過教育長大的人。

    鄒燦：兒童能為社會貢獻什麼？

    奇奇：讓他/她盡情發揮自己的創造力。成年人的想法有時似乎被限制住，不易很快察覺。兒童擁有天生的創造力，很少關心世界上發生的事情。   

    鄒燦：如果你有能力建立一個全新的社會，你會採用什麼政治制度，例如，民主主義、無政府主義、專政、社會主義、寡頭政治、共產主義，是其中之一還是多種制度的結合，為什麼？

    奇奇：我會採用民主主義，因為人們可以站出來說出自己的看法！   

    鄒燦： 如果大多數人都想要同樣的東西，那為什麼我們還在這麼多的問題上存在分歧？

    奇奇：人與人之間是不同的。我們也許希望獲得同樣的東西，但是實現目標的想法可能不同，因此產生了爭執。

    鄒燦：為什麼了解並接受來自不同文化的人們的思維方式和行為方式很重要？

    奇奇：我們出生在不同的家庭，擁有不同的文化，這不是我們的錯。僅僅因為你是天主教徒或猶太人絕不意味著你低人一等。

    鄒燦：你似乎對內戰時期的事情很感興趣。最有趣的事是什麼？
    奇奇：內戰期間讓婦女作間諜。沒人會檢查她們的襯裙（襯裙由金屬材料製成，放在裙子中把裙子撐開。我穿上肯定古里古怪），因此她們可以把信藏在裡面。真是奇妙，人們是怎樣找到不同的生活方式的。

    鄒燦：歷史書中哪些內容最讓你感興趣？

    奇奇：我喜歡讀關於埋伏的內容。我在自己的作品中加入了許多打仗的內容增加吸引力。我對盔甲也很感興趣。

    鄒燦：在有關美國獨立戰爭的著作中，你發現了什麼有趣的事嗎？

奇奇談父母對子女的養育和童年時代

    鄒燦：你認為什麼樣的父母算是好父母？
    奇奇：具有創造性、富有同情心、懂得支持並且充滿愛意。   

    鄒燦：你認為 是什麼原因導致這麼多兒童沉溺於卡通片和電子遊戲而不是把時間花在讀寫上？

    奇奇：我想是因為在看電視、玩電子遊戲變成了他們的習慣前，沒有人鼓勵或告訴他們應該閱讀或寫作。   

    鄒燦：在你心中，幸福的童年是個什麼概念？

    奇奇：感到無憂無慮、開開心心、讀書、寫作、畫畫、玩耍。   

    鄒燦：在你為人母時，你和自己的父母會有幾分相像？你會有何改變？

    奇奇：我會和我的父母幾乎一模一樣，不過我不會有我媽媽的口音，也不會像她那樣一種機會就滔滔不絕講述她那數不盡的成就。s

    鄒燦：你對那些想幫助自己的孩子更好地閱讀和寫作的父母有什麼建議？

    奇奇：不斷地鼓勵他們，直到他們樹立起了自信，開始創作自己的故事，閱讀耕深奧的書籍。   

    鄒燦：你受到了父母怎樣的影響？

    奇奇：我像媽媽一樣愛說話，像爸爸一樣是個悲觀主義者。

    鄒燦：你和家人在一起的時候喜歡幹什麼？

    奇奇：頭蓋骨遊戲， 國際象棋、拼字遊戲（並不是說我寫不好，而是根本不在乎）, 參觀特奴的牛奶場 （巨大的冰激凌店），在小區里散步，到樹林里撿草莓，到公園裡遠足。

    鄒燦：為什麼你覺得讓其他的孩子對閱讀和寫作更感興趣很重要？
    奇奇：如果他們對閱讀和寫作不感興趣，就不能受到他們能夠得到的教育。不接 受教育會發生的事情：無法找到體面的工作；可能在不知道其危害性的情況下喜事毒品等等。

    鄒燦：你覺得在讓其他孩子對閱讀和寫作更感興趣方面子技能做些什麼？

    奇奇：我想如果孩子們看到有人（比如我）確實喜歡閱讀和寫作，他們可能也開始喜歡。

    鄒燦：你願意和其他小朋友參加工作坊展示你在寫作上的進步嗎？

    奇奇：是的，我看是個好主意。

    鄒燦：你認為閱讀和寫作會影響政治嗎？

    鄒燦：技術，尤其是微軟公司的辦公軟體給你的寫作帶來了什麼？
    奇奇：微軟的文字處理軟體提高了我使用新辭彙的能力，我不必擔心是否會犯拼寫錯誤。微軟的文字處理軟體還有許多不同的字體，如果字體能夠反映我所描寫的時代，我會覺得很有用。

    鄒燦：技術改善人們生活的例子有哪些？

    奇奇：它改善了我的生活。我認為如果使用得當，它也能夠改善別人的生活。技術幫助我學會了許多全新的辭彙，還幫助我掌握了我曾未想過自己能夠學會的東西。

    鄒燦：你覺得科學技術和進步有可能給我們的生活帶來潛在的危害嗎？

    奇奇：不會，除非原本能夠幫助治癒某種疾病的機器突然發生故障，害死了病人。我是說，什麼事情都可能發生，只要不是太嚴重就好。

    鄒燦：你認為我們應該在世界上那個地區使用更多技術？

    奇奇：如果某個地方獲得很多技術，而非洲連台電腦都沒有是不公平的。

    鄒燦：你曾站在我們附近公園裡的石頭上，就保護環境問題發表了聲情並貌的演講，你為什麼如此關注此事？

    奇奇：我們必須保護環境，因為是環境給予我們新鮮的空氣、蔭涼和自然的美麗。如果我們繼續亂砍亂伐，繼續污染空氣，我們將失去曾經擁有的自然美和新鮮的空氣。     

    鄒燦：美國是否應該對保護環境承擔更多的責任？為什麼？

    奇奇：是的。我認為美國在保護環境方面應該承擔更多的責任。因為我們對自然資源的浪費多於其他國家，我們應該注意少消耗資源，更加謹慎使用汽車及其它污染環境的東西。

奇奇談旅遊、食品、閑暇和幸福

    鄒燦：你對旅行和享受美食熱情高漲，每次活動會給你帶來什麼？
    奇奇：愉悅和營養。   

    鄒燦：如果你馬上可以到世界上任意三個地方旅行，你會去哪裡，為什麼？

    奇奇：歐洲，因為那裡有許多地標；中國，因為那裡有萬里長城和故宮；阿拉斯加，因為那裡有茫茫雪原。   

    鄒燦：為什麼你認為人們的生活當中要有閑暇時間很重要？

    奇奇：我覺得擺脫每天循規蹈矩的生活稍微休息一下很重要，否則生活會顯得枯燥無味——例如，起床、穿衣、吃早飯等等。穿衣服前我們可以看看書 ，吃早飯前可以和兄弟姐妹或父母聊聊天。   

    鄒燦：幸運和開心之間有區別嗎？

    奇奇：當然。幸運不一定會使你開心。例如，即使你在卡特里娜颶風中倖免遇難，洪水也可能讓你渾身濕透，因為缺少食物而營養不良，發高燒。我不知道你會怎麼樣，反正我如果發燒是不會開心的。     

    鄒燦：你是樂觀主義者還是悲觀主義者？選擇其一的正反兩面是什麼？

    奇奇：我也許是個悲觀主義者。如果是個悲觀主義者，情況好轉時你會非常高興，糟糕時，也不會過於失望，因為你早就料到會如此。但是，有時會讓你脾氣暴躁，讓你痛苦。成為一個樂觀主義者（就像我媽媽）大多數時候可能會讓你感到開心、快樂。但是，如果現實不隨你所願，你的希望就會受挫，會更加難過。

    如果你是個悲觀主義者，情況好轉的時候你會非常開心；情況惡化的時候也不會過於失望，因為你已經料到情況可能如此。但有時會讓你變的脾氣暴躁、悲慘可憐。樂觀主義者（像我媽媽）大多數時候會讓你很開心、很高興。但是如果情況未如你所願，你的希望會破滅，會更加難過。

    鄒燦：你認為什麼會給人們帶來幸福？什麼會給你帶來幸福？

    孩子的成功令我喜出望外，這一點不能否認，否則我是在撒謊。然而，他們對學習發自內心的渴望、對尋求知識與智慧的熱情、通過自我評價完善自我的衝動、對建設性批評的率真以及一絲不苟的努力，讓我對他們所取得的成就既感到敬畏又感到自豪。

    奇奇創作之旅的開端令人難忘而又步履蹣跚，我幫助奇奇的歷程如出一轍，我知之甚少，也沒有任何指導。我知道自己要支持她，鼓勵她；我也知道自己必須能給她提一些具體的建議。讀奇奇寫的故事時，我會產生一些直覺的想法，但是起初，我找不到確切的語言來分析她的故事，也找不到恰當的字眼告訴她怎樣修改。我翻遍了圖書館里能找到的有關寫作的著作，但卻發現教孩子寫作的書籍十分匱乏。我能找到的書似乎設立的門檻都很低。奇奇 已經遠遠超過了作者視為奇迹的熟練程度。幸運的是，這些書證明我在家裡已經有了一位寫作老師——奇奇自己。

    我通過觀察奇奇的日常寫作研究了她的學習過程。我留意哪些活動有效哪些無效。奇奇真正開始創作時，（我是說那時我們意識到她已經在一年之內創作了25萬字，而且大部分內容生動有趣甚至還很深刻）我們成立了寫作培訓班，想看看是否同樣的教學原則也適用於其他孩子。我認真觀察培訓班裡的學生，學習激發他們突破的技巧。許多研究都是一個反覆實驗的過程；我向你提供的捷徑就是——成為孩子的熱心聽眾和老師。

    在幫助孩子寫作的過程中，你所擔當的最重要角色就是成為他/她忠實而熱情的聽眾。對孩子的寫作努力表現出發自內心的真誠關注和信心會使孩子感到很隨意、很自在，會主動說出自己的構思並把寫好的作品拿給你看。兒童會向成年人一樣感覺缺少安全感——把自己的作品拿給你看對他們的自我是一種很大的冒險。他們對你的批評很敏感，這一點至關重要。不要直接說出你的不滿之處，而要充滿好奇。這樣可以鼓勵孩子與你進一步討論自己的作品，更深入地思考。

    要表現出你對孩子的作品很感興趣，這是成為有效指導者的第一步。絕大多數（如果不是全部）兒童都渴望展示自己的能力。你的任務就是表現出自己對他們的作品懷有濃厚的興趣。這意味著要花時間實實在在地閱讀他們寫下的每個字。你感興趣，這對他們很重要，會鼓勵他們繼續創作，甚至在遇到艱難時也不放棄。

    進行寫作的孩子閱讀時目光會更加敏銳。他們會有意無意地更加留意句子結構、詞語選擇及其它重要寫作要素。這種意識會在此後的寫作中反映出來。奇奇 意識到，自己很容易寫一些和讀過的其他作者的作品極為類似的東西，顯然她正在讀的書的格調和風格常常會影響她自己當時的寫作風格。我認為這不是一種負面的東西；兒童早期的學習很大程度上依賴對各種資源的模仿。即使他們無法描述抽象風格的內容，他們天生的模仿所讀作品的傾向也會使增加他們成為作家的可能。向孩子提供各種各樣的閱讀材料十分重要。

    因為大多數兒童缺少豐富的生活體驗，為了增加創作的深度，他們必須通過閱讀體會別人的體驗。絕對不能低估兒童的情感與所讀作品的聯繫。在要求寫作培訓班的學生描寫讓他們悲傷的事情時，許多人寫的是在他們最喜歡的作品中發生的事。奇奇曾寫道，在她所讀的故事中，當一個人物經歷痛苦或災難時，她覺得自己與人物的命運聯在了一起，有時她會在腦海中為故事編寫新的結局。誰都不希望自己的孩子悲傷，但是培養他們對自己生活之外的人和事的理解很重要，這一過程相對來說比較容易。

    對孩子的作品採用提問法比直截了當的批評更有效。用提問的形式對他們的作品做出反應時，更像是討論或提供幫助，孩子更有可能敞開心扉，更有勇氣分享自己的作品，更願意考慮其他的選擇。寫作中出現的大多數問題未必是「錯的」，而只是有些地方需要改進。問問你的孩子「怎樣才能更好？」如果你創造的環境有利於探究其他可能性，大多數兒童/學生願意改進。

    要使孩子的創作之路少些挫折多些樂趣，就必須利用多種技巧。孩子眼中迸發出的火花，聲音中掩飾不住的興奮流露出了他們取得的成就。利用微軟辦公軟體中的文字處理程序，他們很容易就能計算出寫好的字數，立刻會對自己的成就感到自豪。他們努力的結果是顯而易見的。這種切實的成就感會激發他們繼續寫下去的慾望，再添加一句話、一個段落或者是一個故事。利用電腦寫作的兒童不再受無法正確拼寫每個單詞或需要知道他們要用的每個詞的確切定義的限制。拼寫檢查和查字典功能使他們不再擔心，不再受限，可以充分釋放自己的創造力，樹立信心以及對寫作的熱愛。

    我們的寫作培訓班（www.seedsoflearning.com）  最為自豪的時刻是一名學生的母親告訴我們，她偶然聽到自己的女兒鼓勵她的夥伴將寫作當成一項娛樂活動。曾經最不情願的學生成了積極份子，督促其他的孩子研究學習。她在我們的寫作培訓班僅僅過了幾個星期，就完全改變了。從絞盡腦汁擠出幾個詞到文思泉湧，她的臉上露出了微笑，眼睛煥發出了光彩。她從寫作中找到了激情，寫作成了一種娛樂形式。

    當孩子們意識到寫作的空間無限廣闊，他們可以自由創造時，就會開始寫作，並將寫作當作快樂的源泉。兒童對「假裝」 有著天生的熱愛，當你讓他們意識到寫作是另一種形式的「假裝」時，就不會覺得像學校里有時布置的寫作作業一樣「令人討厭」。

    我們從來沒有告訴過奇奇應該怎樣寫，寫什麼來干擾她的創造力。然而，絕大多數人認為，確實存在一些基本要素能夠區分出作品的優劣。奇奇對其中許多規則直覺的理解得益於她讀過大量作品；我們的目標是鼓勵她在父母和老師的指導下發現其他的規則。探索的樂趣是實實在在的，也是孩子成長為作家的關鍵因素。

鄒燦回答家長提問

    下面的部分引自鄒燦與其他父母的座談，她就如何鼓勵孩子的寫作興趣，同時又向他們傳授基本和高級寫作技巧等問題回答了父母的提問。
    朱莉婭的爸爸： 我女兒喜歡閱讀，並且讀了很多書。我覺得她可以寫得不錯，也會喜歡寫作，因為她讀了那麼多書。

    鄒燦： 喜歡閱讀不會自動轉變為熱愛寫作，但幸運的是你的女兒已經具備了基本素質，為幫助她成為熱情洋溢的優秀作家打下了基礎。寫作比閱讀需要更多的努力、勇氣和耐心。寫作包括複雜的思考以及堅持不懈的練習。寫作是個費時的差事，它使我們要面對公眾的批評。寫作不會像閱讀一樣讓我們即刻感到滿足。

    要幫助你的女兒將熱情轉移到寫作上，你需要協助她練習寫作，幫助她將寫作和從閱讀中得到的樂趣聯繫起來。當她看到你在讀她的作品時流露出的興奮和自豪時，她將意識到自己有能力使別人得到快樂、受到鼓舞，這和自己享受其中的樂趣，自己受到鼓舞獲得的滿足是一樣的。閱讀和寫作形影不離，但是如果筆耕不輟，她就會完全理解閱讀中得到的美感。

    鮑勃的媽媽: 我兒子字跡潦草並且討厭書寫。他在語法和拼寫上總是錯誤百出，這些錯誤使他望而卻步，他連篇像樣的作業都寫不出來。

    鄒燦： 作為孩子的父母，最重要的是要熟悉你要傳授的內容。為了建立起可信性，你需要獲得孩子的尊重和信任。首先要盡量多讀書，充分了解這個領域。通過閱讀本書及其他有關寫作的書籍，可以培養一些教學技巧和教學能力。

    約翰尼的媽媽: 我的孩子對學校布置的寫作作業，如讀書報告，總是很抵觸。

    鄒燦： 當學校作業成為恐懼以及不愉快記憶的象徵時，孩子就會通過自己的行動來迴避，或者為了迅速做完功課而敷衍了事。幫助孩子擺脫這種情況的最佳方法不是直接觸及此事，而是另外布置一項作業，讓他們做些與眾不同的事情。

    例如，你們可以在一家人閑暇的時候彼此吹牛。為了釋放孩子對創作故事的壓抑，你可以讓他/她為你推薦一本書讀。問問他/她為什麼認為你會喜歡這本書，思考你會讀這本書的原因可以激發孩子的敘述能力和推理能力，他將來在寫出出色的讀書報告時需要這些能力。

    然後，當他開始寫下一篇讀書報告時，提醒他在說服你讀他喜歡的那本書時表現多棒。告訴他寫讀書報告與此完全一樣，只是這次他有機會提出更具說服力的論據，因為他有更充裕的時間。

    另一個方法是帶小傢伙去書店，讓他選一本想買的書。但是告訴他買前必須說明買這本書的理由，你可以組織一下自己的問題，讓孩子想想什麼樣的書才是一本好書；學著用這種方式思考對他將來寫讀書報告很有用處。當孩子能夠很容易地敘述故事，對書的內容提出問題時，寫讀書報告對他來說將不再是件可怕的事情。

    阿娃的爸爸： 我的孩子似乎喜歡寫作，並且還寫了不少。但是，每次讀她寫的東西，總覺得缺少主題，故事很單調，情節也沒什麼意義。

    鄒燦：祝賀你！你已經贏了一半了。對寫作的興趣會促使她檢查、評價自己寫作的質量。在這個節骨眼上，學著自己修改、校訂會使她更上一層樓。為了保證這個過程不至於變得枯燥乏味，我強烈建議利用電腦來完成這些工作。你可以和她一起修改潤色，讓她知道，隨意加幾個詞，加幾句話很容易，可以給一個故事增添很多內容。如果情節不夠鮮明，就問她一些問題。鼓勵她愉快地修改。吸引她的注意力。讓你的問題聽起來像個迷。你怎樣讓我明白你的意思？你能讓故事中的主人公做些什麼幫助我了解他們的生活或個性嗎？孩子會發現這麼容易、這麼快就能讓冗長而平淡的作品變得光彩奪目、迴環曲折。她會為自己的作品感到自豪。

    傑西卡的媽媽：我的孩子參加了天才課程的學習。他們有許多學術寫作作業。孩子以前非常喜歡寫一些有創意的東西，但是現在我覺得她一心想的是完成作業，而不會花時間和精力在她寫的東西中多添加些細節、更用心地組織。

    鄒燦： 聰明的孩子寫出的作業平庸刻板不足為奇。 我認為非常重要的一點是在你的孩子面對越來越多學術寫作時不要抹殺她對創造性寫作的熱愛。如果學術寫作的要求非常乏味，妨礙她的想象力和創造性的發揮，你應該找機會轉移她的注意力，讓她繼續寫一些有創意的東西。孩子找不到寫讀書報告的靈感和動力的原因極有可能是她沒有發現寫這類東西的意義，只是把它當成完成一項作業而已。如果要求我們做的工作對我們來說毫無意義，最後的結果既不會使我們得到利益也不會讓我們感到自豪，寫作會因此而變的平淡無奇。到了該重新燃起兒時曾經有過的對寫作的興趣的時候了。孩子們喜歡通過寫故事創造他們想象的世界，在故事寫作中擁有的自由，使他們體會到了自我，使他們感到自豪。   

    朱迪的媽媽：我的孩子倒是喜歡寫作，但是我希望自己能有更多時間幫助她，使她寫得更好。可是我不知道怎樣鼓勵她多寫，怎樣給她一些具體的建議幫助她寫得更多。我該從何處開始？又該如何開始呢？

    鄒燦：確定一個可行的時間表認真閱讀孩子的作品。鼓勵她每天寫，告訴她你的多麼期待著讀到故事的下一章。在提出問題指導她思考需要改進的方面前，對她的作品給出積極而具體的評價。

    邁克的媽媽: 我的兒子不喜歡讀書，我覺得讓他寫東西根本不可能。我該怎麼幫他？

    鄒燦： 讀寫能力相互關聯。要想讓他對寫作感興趣，首先要讓他閱讀。父母需要投入相當多的時間和精力才能幫助他改變舊習慣，培養良好的新習慣，把讀書當成消遣。減少其他一些分散注意力的活動，如看電視、玩電子遊戲，讓他轉而讀書。看看他對什麼感興趣，找一些培養他這方面興趣的書。大多數孩子喜歡講笑話，喜歡幽默。給孩子弄一些笑話書，和他一起閱讀，和他一起歡笑。幫助他將快樂的家庭時光同閱讀聯繫起來。與此同時，讓他講講故事，或者畫一些帶故事情節的漫畫。這個過程可能會花些時間，但是得到的回報會是他對閱讀和寫作終生的熱愛。

寫作的樂趣

    「假裝」是孩子喜歡的遊戲
    「如果讓你在寫故事與寫讀書報告之間做出選擇，你選什麼？」我問寫作培訓班的一個學生。

    「寫故事，」莎拉回答。

    「為什麼？」我問道。

    「因為寫故事的時候想寫什麼就寫什麼，」莎拉微笑著說。

    大多數孩子都喜歡玩假裝遊戲。給他們機會無拘無束地創作自己的故事時，他們的擔心、壓抑就會一掃而光，他們就會樂在其中。

    我曾問過奇奇寫作時的感受。她當時是這樣說的：「我覺得自己似乎身臨其境，有時我是一個觀眾，在天空注視著故事中的人物；有時，我覺得自己就是人物本身，感覺得到他們的幸福和悲傷。我只關注我自己的故事，不太在意其他的事情。我全神貫注於自己的創作，很少注意周圍的世界。」當我們能夠真正自得其樂時，周圍的世界似乎就消失了。

    當完全沉浸在寫作中時，她最喜歡的姿勢就是雙腳從一把高高的椅子上垂下來，前後蕩來蕩去，腦袋輕輕靠在肩膀上；只能聽到敲打鍵盤的聲音。她在寫作時體會到的樂趣勝過一切；有時很難將她從寫作中拉出來。

    我們選編了她最近幾個月創作的九個故事；這些故事風格不同，類型各異。故事按時間順序編排，從而表現她在創作上取得的進步。

    為了保護故事的原創性以及她的原意，我們只是稍作編輯加工。奇奇聽從建議，並親自錄入了校正之處（包括句法和語法）。有些細節也許看似不夠和諧或不合邏輯，但是我們認為可以從中洞察力孩子的思維方式，並且能夠傳達出奇奇寫作時感受到的自發性和樂趣。儘管這些故事幾乎未做任何改動，但是奇奇還是積極改正了其中的一些句法和語法錯誤，你可以用她的故事向自己的孩子解釋寫作的指導原則。

    奇奇創作的最有趣的一個故事是她在2005年4月寫的The Realm of Possibility，講述的是任性而又喜歡冒險的女孩格溫的故事。格溫被捲入了一個反對自己父親王國的陰謀。與奇奇以後故事的不同之處在於，這個故事情節很強，主題也很明顯。The Realm of Possibility採用的是插話式。格溫的一些冒險有些荒謬，但是描寫地很可愛，很精彩。我們選了這個故事，希望比照她最近的作品讓你清楚地看到她的發展與進步。我們希望這個故事能使你明白，利用奇奇找到的那些有用的原則和練習，你可以幫助自己的孩子取得的進步有多大。

    相反，《兒童日記》是絮絮叨叨的現代故事。故事中的主角只有九歲，每當母親告訴她應該記日記時，她就會很惱火。但是日子慢慢過去了，她開始利用日記宣洩自己對姐姐和父母新收養的中國孤兒的情感。主人公輕鬆風趣的語調和喜劇性的獨白深入探討了十分棘手的同胞競爭問題。

    The Triumph of Love又回到了中世紀時期，講述的是書獃子羅特林德的故事。當她發現由於政治原因自己要被嫁出去時，她毅然投入了戰鬥。這個故事展示了許多奇奇喜歡寫的內容：喜歡鬥爭和閱讀的勇敢的主人公，孩子戰勝了粗俗的成年對手，一個七歲孩子眼中的政治虛偽。

    Agymah and the Amule的背景是古埃及，這個故事是表現奇奇最喜愛的寫作手法的典範：探究古代歷史設計背景和情節線索。這個講述宮廷陰謀的故事的核心是：一個貴族女孩與負責照顧她和哥哥的奴隸之間的友誼。我們喜歡的一些方面有：有魔力的護身符、古怪的咒語、難忘的捕鱷魚行動。

    奇奇寫的第一個有明確主題的故事是The Rebel』s Reward，強調了擁有不違背自己天性，做自己喜歡做的事情的決心的重要性。在一所旨在把學生培養成淑女的學校里，凱瑟琳是唯一用心學習讀寫的女孩。她的老師不但沒有表揚她，反而斥責她外表凌亂，批評她的反叛行為，其中包括偷偷跑出去學習擊劍。一位來訪的貴族為凱瑟琳的智慧和膽識所傾倒。她的同學受到了觸動，意識到有時學識可以幫助自己征服一個好男人，而單靠禮節無法做到。

    奇奇最優秀的故事之一The Tools of the Trade講述了繪畫大師和其學生之間的複雜關係。故事發生在15世紀的義大利，這篇故事充滿了成年人對歷史細節深刻的洞察力。

    Rotrind sighed, rubbed her eyes, and
    slowly repeated the Ten Commandments.

    She was dreaming that she was with her

    favorite tutor, Master Hurston.

    「Rotrind! Come back to your senses!

    You are supposed to recite the sentence

    about Plato!」 Rotrind』s other tutor, Master

    Verrick, exclaimed, adjusting his spectacles.

    「Yes, Master Verrick,」 Rotrind said,

    half-awake.

    「Now, we begin with the sentence

    about Plato, shall we?」 Master Verrick

    asked. It was more of a command than a

    question.

    「Yes, Master Verrick,」 Rotrind

    murmured obediently, though she had

    barely heard what Verrick had said.

    「Good. Now…」 Master Verrick began

    the sentence with Rotrind until the end of

    the lesson, when he was sure that Rotrind

    had it fully memorized.

    「Remember, do this sentence, write an

    essay about the quest of Sir Galahad, write

    another paragraph chronicling the story of

    Sir Lancelot, research a bit about the

    theories of Aristotle, and remember not to

    sleep during the lesson…」 Rotrind fled

    before Master Verrick could finish his

    sentence.

    In her room Rotrind found solace by

    her tall window, and knelt down to pray to

    Saint Bede, patron saint of scholars. As she clutched the gold crucifix that

    hung around her neck, she prayed that she would learn and be intelligent.

    A few minutes later, a knock came at the door. A train of maids entered

    as Rotrind opened the door.

    「Your grandmother, Madame Sterling, wishes for us to help you dress

    for the main meal,」 the tallest, Lydia, said.

    「Is it not rather early for the main meal to be served?」 Rotrind

    inquired.

    uncomfortable white petticoats and attired in a green velvet kirtle. Lydia

    tied the corset so tight that Rotrind could hardly breathe, and the white

    stockings that she pulled on just seemed too stiff. Last of all her feet were

    squeezed into a pair of tight silk slippers.

    「You look gorgeous, milady!」 Lydia cried with amazement.

    「Escort me to the Main Hall,」 Rotrind commanded.

    「Yes, milady,」 Lydia said softly. She and another maid took Rotrind』s

    arms and escorted her downstairs to the Hall. Barons, counts, dukes (such

    as Rotrind』s father), noblewomen, noblemen, knights, jesters, dancing

    dwarves, and servants stood chatting, exchanging friendly gossip, and

    commenting about the food. At the very head of the long table the king

    sat, looking on at the commotion and devouring an unusually large

    portion of spiced beef. His daughter, Princess Eleanor, sat at the foot at

    the table. She was queen in all but name.

    「Announcing the arrival of Lady Rotrind, daughter of Sir Richard,

    son of the Duke of Cornwall and Aragon!」 Rotrind felt her cheeks grow

    warm as two trumpeters played a loud fanfare to announce her arrival.

    The noblewomen moved away so that there would be room for Rotrind

    to sit down on the wooden bench.

    「Did you hear that Madame Sterling might marry? For the fourth

    time?」 Gossip spread easily around the court. Rotrind』s ears perked up.

    「What is that about Madame Sterling?」 another noblewoman said.

    「She might marry again! And to the Duke Tomas Fitzgerald!」 the first

    noblewoman said.

    「Madame Sterling is going to marry again—and to the Duke Tomas

    Fitzgerald?」 Rotrind asked, amazed.

    「She might! But that old codger Fitzgerald would make Madame

    Sterling look beautiful—although Madame Sterling』s beauty is limited.」

    The noblewoman just then realized that she had been speaking to

    Madame Sterling』s granddaughter, and hastily said, 「No, I mean, er, well,

    I think actually Madame Sterling is very beautiful—」

    Rotrind cut the noblewoman off and cried, 「I will inform my father,

    Sir Richard, of this!」

    The noblewoman looked frightened and said, 「My dear, let』s just

    smooth it all over and—」

    「All of your efforts to flatter me will be for naught,」 Rotrind said
    coldly. The noblewoman said no more after that and after eating a

    generous helping of peas, cornbread, and some delicious salmon that had

    been caught by one of the King』s huntsmen, Rotrind retired to her room,

    undid her hair, allowing it to hang in a cascade down on her shoulders and

    to her hip, took off her corset, flung her petticoats in the laundry basket,

    and changed into a plain white gown with black lace trimming the low

    neckline. Then she put on a black hooded cape and set off for her father』s

    chambers, which were on the other side of the castle. Making sure that

    nobody was watching, Rotrind ran up to her father』s door, knocked three

    times, and when the door was opened, threw off her hood.

    「Father, I have something to speak to you about,」 Rotrind said

    quickly.

    「Come in, Rotrind, my beauty,」 Sir Richard said. He was wearing a

    shirt of chain mail—obviously he had been practicing a few sword strokes

    with his close friend, the Duke Laurence, who was seated in the only chair

    in the room.

    「Hello, Rotrind,」 Duke Laurence said. Rotrind nodded and curtsied,

    but she did not reply. She did not like Duke Laurence』s pointed nose, his

    black, bushy eyebrows that almost covered his eyes, or his short black hair.

    「What is it that you want to tell me? And should we have a bit of

    privacy…no offense, Laurence.」

    「Duke Laurence may stay if he wishes,」 Rotrind said, 「however I do

    not believe this subject will be of much interest to him.」

    「Well put, Rotrind. However I will stay. Perhaps there will be a grain

    of interest in your story,」 Duke Laurence said in his cold voice.

    Rotrind began, ignoring Duke Laurence and shifting her attention to

    Sir Richard, saying, 「I have heard a certain noblewoman who was sitting

    next to me insult Grandmother Sterling.」

    「Who was that person?」 Sir Richard exclaimed, jumping up and

    waving his sword, roaring, 「I shall banish that woman off to some

    faraway place or else smite off her head!」

    「I think I can help you,」 Duke Laurence said, his slow, cold voice

    cutting into Rotrind』s thoughts, 「I have a vast knowledge of noblewomen

    in this court due to my many marriages. If Rotrind can give me a proper

    description, I will be off and return promptly with the cursed woman.」

    「Thank you, my friend. Rotrind, what was the woman like?」 Sir

    Richard asked.

    「She was rather…spherical. She wore a heavily powdered wig. There

    was much rouge on her cheeks and she wore a black dress.」

    「Ah, I know who you are talking about. The name is Countess

    Armaine. She hangs around and listens to what should be kept private for

    other ears,」 Duke Laurence said.

    「Summon her here immediately,」 Sir Richard said, 「she has insulted

    my mother, and I do not want a woman who has insulted her mistress in

    this court.」

    「Yes, my friend,」 Duke Laurence said. Soon he returned with the

    countess, who looked frightened and was cursing.

    「You will be sorry for this!」 she shrieked as Duke Laurence held her

    tightly.

    「Countess Armaine, you will be stripped of your title and banished to

    the far west,」 Sir Richard said majestically.

    「Not the far west!」 Countess Armaine looked terrified.

    After pondering a bit, Sir Richard said, 「For the sake of your

    husband, the Count, you will be sent to a convent that is not far from

    here. You will leave all of your personal belongings and dresses and

    jewelry here.」

    The Countess Armaine exclaimed, 「Surely you can not be
    condemning me to this kind of cruelty! I am quite sure that there is no

    other duke crueler than yourself.」

    「My dear lady,」 Duke Laurence said coldly, 「there is no duke more

    just than Sir Richard. And if it were not for his wishes, your head would

    be off by my sword in a matter of minutes.」

    「That may be,」 the Countess Armaine said, 「but—」

    「OUT!」 Sir Richard suddenly bellowed. Countess Armaine fled for

    her life, but two knights pursued her, intent on claiming a reward from Sir

    Richard.

    「If you insure that this woman is taken to the convent of Saint

    Veronica, this woman』s trinkets and gems will go to your family,」 Sir

    Richard said. The two knights were off at once, and soon returned, saying

    that everything had gone smoothly.

    「Thank you, Rotrind, for informing me of the Countess Armaine』s

    insult to your grandmother,」 Sir Richard said to Rotrind after everyone

    had gone away from his apartments.

    「You』re welcome, Father,」 Rotrind said. Sir Richard looked outside at

    the darkening sky and remarked,

    「You should be in your room now. I will escort you.」

    「Thank you, Father,」 she took his hand.

    As they exited the room and stepped onto the dewy grass, Sir Richard

    exclaimed, 「Rotrind, do you know who that is?」

    「Who?」 Rotrind asked.

    「Him,」 Sir Richard said.

    Rotrind looked ahead and saw a dark, sinister figure approaching

    them. Sir Richard drew out his sword from its glinting scabbard and said,

    「Rotrind, go quickly to the castle. Alert the king and his knights. If they

    do not believe you, here is my written note.」 Sir Richard took a piece of

    paper from his breast pocket and in his untidy scrawl, wrote,

    Come quickly - unknown man approaching. Be on your guard.

    Rotrind ran into the castle and alerted the king and the knights. The

    king called Rotrind 「a little cherub」 for alerting them. The knights, in full

    chain mail and armed with swords, lances, and shields came marching out

    smartly.

    「Halt, unknown traveler!」 the king commanded.

    「I am a poor pilgrim, with nothing to defend myself except my knife,

    which would not hurt anybody and is merely made to cut soft bread or

    perhaps a block of smelly cheese. What do you wish of me?」 the man

    whined.

    「Show yourself,」 the king ordered. As the man flung his hood aside,

    he drew a sharp dagger from its leather sheath and cried out wildly. He

    lunged at the king, bringing the dagger down on his helmet. But the

    knights were ready. They had their swords, and Sir Richard wounded the

    man badly at the thigh.

    When the knights had him finally cornered, he exclaimed, 「The

    vengeance of my successors will be great! You will be sorry you ever

    treated me this way! They will avenge my death—」

    The king complained of an earache and commanded that the man be

    gagged and imprisoned in the oubliette until an appropriate hangman

    could be found.

    「Yes, majesty,」 the jailer said, turning away.

    「Oh, first, ruffian, tell us your name,」 the king said.

    「I shall tell you villains nothing,」 was the sullen reply.

    One day, a few weeks later, Rotrind was studying Scripture with

    Master Hurston. Suddenly there was a banging and scraping at the door.

    Rotrind and Master Hurston leapt up from their chairs. Two squires

    whom Rotrind knew to serve her father opened the door. They were

    holding Master Merrtont, who taught Rotrind the lyre and the virginal.

    「What is the meaning of this?」 Master Hurston sputtered angrily,

    almost drowning out the sounds of his unusually loud fart.

    「Yes, do you not know that you are in the presence of Lady Rotrind,
    daughter of Sir Richard, son of the Duke of Cornwall and Aragon?」

    Rotrind demanded angrily, clenching her teeth. She advanced towards the

    squires, her hand on the gold pommel of her dagger.

    「Sir, and fair lady.」 At this the squires kissed Rotrind』s extended hand.

    「I bring before you this villain, who is accused of plotting murder against

    fair Lady Rotrind, by poison in Lady Rotrind』s wine that was to be put in

    by one of his associates (who do not reveal their identities) this evening.

    We hope you excuse us for our unseemly interrupting, but it is our duty

    to Sir Richard, son of the Duke of Cornwall and Aragon, and our duty to

    Lady Rotrind, daughter of Sir Richard, to inform you of this.」

    「Has my father been told of this, my men?」 Rotrind asked, although

    she already knew the answer.

    「No. We thought it best to inform you first. You and…er…」

    「Master Hurston,」 Master Hurston said warmly, taking the squires』

    hands and shaking them firmly.

    「Well met, Master Hurston.」

    「Yes,」 Master Hurston replied.

    「And may I ask, are you sure that this man is the culprit? Or that there

    is even a plot against me? Do you have proof of this all?」 Rotrind asked.

    「Well…no. Duke Laurence, who is an honorable man and who would

    never lie, told us of this. He said that he had seen a message passed

    between Merrtont and a person whom he believed to be an old castle

    messenger,」 one squire, Peter, said.

    「Duke Laurence is a shady character and not to be trusted.」 Rotrind』s

    voice was hard and cold.

    「I believe my ears betray me. It sounded like you said that Duke

    Laurence is not to be trusted?」 the squires said in unison.

    「I said that you are not to trust Duke Laurence,」 Rotrind said. Even

    Master Hurston, who was used to Rotrind』s strange ways, was surprised

    and said,

    「Seriously, m』lady Rotrind, you cannot mean what you say. The Duke

    Laurence is a close friend of your father and he would not lie.」

    「Yes, m』lady, listen to sense,」 the squires said.

    「Duke Laurence hates Master Merrtont! He would try to frame him

    for every single thing that goes wrong in the castle. I suspect that Duke

    Laurence wrote the letter himself and feigned that it was written by

    Master Merrtont. And my father is not to be informed of this. Squires,

    you are dismissed. And Master Hurston, you also. And…wait! Swear to

    me you will not breathe a word of this to anyone. And especially not my

    father.」

    「As you wish, m』lady,」 Master Hurston and the squires hastily left the

    room, leaving Rotrind alone. She felt the desire for some warm drink to

    soothe her nerves, and rang the bell that summoned Marie, her personal

    lady-in-waiting.

    「What do you desire, m』lady?」 Marie asked.

    「Bring some tea to me. Make sure that it is hot. And tell the royal

    hostler to saddle and make ready a horse for me.」

    「Yes, m』lady,」 Marie said, curtsying. In a few minutes, Rotrind』s tea

    arrived, steaming hot. Marie tied a rag around the cup so that Rotrind

    would not burn her fingers when she held it.

    「The hostler has made ready a steed?」 Rotrind asked.

    「Yes, m』lady. The mount is waiting for you to arrive.」

    「Tell Master Wenner that we will have my riding lessons early and take

    him to my room.」

    「Yes, m』lady,」 Marie said, leaving the room. Rotrind took another sip

    of tea. Soon Master Wenner arrived. He was a tall, thin man who always

    wore a waistcoat under his silk doublet, and though many would find him

    too solemn for their tastes, he had a way of explaining things that made

    Rotrind feel at ease.

    「Welcome, Master Wenner. Please make yourself comfortable,」

    Rotrind said. Master Wenner seated himself in the chair that was across

    from Rotrind, which was still warm from Master Hurston sitting on it

    minutes before.

    「I have been informed by your lady-in-waiting, Marie, that we are to
    have our riding lessons earlier than usual today,」 Master Wenner said.

    「Yes. I hope that there is not anything that troubles you with this

    schedule,」 Rotrind said.

    「No, not at all,」 Master Wenner said, 「I was merely curious, merely

    curious about this change.」

    「I wish to ride a horse again,」 Rotrind said, sipping the last of her tea,

    「so let us proceed to the field.」

    「Yes, m』lady,」 Master Wenner said. Leading the way out to the field,

    which was not far from the courtyard. At the gate to the field, a graceful

    dappled mare stood tossing her head and whinnying.

    「This mare is not the kind of horse I was hoping for,」 Master Wenner

    said, 「but it will do.」

    「I could ask the hostler to make ready another horse,」 Rotrind said.

    「Oh, no, this will do,」 Master Wenner said, 「I do not want to trouble

    you.」

    「Alright then,」 Rotrind said, and easily swung herself onto the saddle.

    「Sit up straight. Good! Now hold the reins tight!」

    Rotrind jabbed the horse』s side with her silver spurs, and galloped off.

    「Ride the horse at a gallop two times around the field,」 Master

    Wenner commanded. Rotrind obeyed and was soon back to where Master

    Wenner was standing.

    「Now ride three times around the field at a trot,」 Master Wenner

    instructed. When Rotrind had finished that, Master Wenner taught her

    about the different kinds of saddles, and after that the lesson was over

    and Rotrind was free to do whatever she wanted to until luncheon, which

    was still an hour away. She went to her room and sat down on her bed.

    She was about to take a book from the shelf when a knock came at the

    door. She opened it to see her father』s messenger, Fortindo.

    「Your father wishes to see you, m』lady,」 Fortindo said, bowing.

    「As you wish,」 Rotrind said, and allowed Fortindo to lead her to her

    father』s room. After Rotrind was inside, he left.

    「Hello, Father. What do you wish me for?」 Rotrind asked.

    「I have decided who you are to marry,」 Sir Richard said.

    「Who?」 Rotrind asked, suddenly alarmed.

    「The nobleman Ferdinand Castello. You have seen him before. I

    decided a few days ago, and I forgot to tell you of my decision.」 Sir

    Richard felt guilty about lying to his daughter, but he knew that he could

    not explain his real reasoning to Rotrind.

    「Not Castello!」 Rotrind cried. Ferdinand was a short, overly plump

    man who had hair growing out of his nose, hairy skin, and little piggy

    eyes. His beard stuck out in places and his breath smelled of ale and

    moldy blue cheese. Plus he was twenty years older than Rotrind. Nobody

    wanted to sit next to him at a royal banquet or any other fine occasion

    because he had terrible table manners and farted at every grand speech.

    But he was rich and a favorite of the king.

    「Yes, Castello,」 Sir Richard said sternly, astonished that he could

    sound so unkind to his only daughter.

    「But he has the worst table manners and the worst appearance and he

    has the worst—」

    Rotrind was cut off by Sir Richard, who said, 「Sometimes you must

    think of what is best for your family. I couldn』t just give you away to some

    poor serf, could I? Castello is wealthy and a favorite of the king. It may

    be that you dislike him, but marrying is not meant for love. Soon he will

    be promoted to the position of Grand Court Lord!」 Sir Richard again

    surprised himself by sounding cold and harsh. Rotrind fought back tears

    and quivered, 「But Father, is there not another man of noble birth that

    you could choose…just not Castello?」

    「Not any who have asked. And you can』t just remain unmarried. Not

    one person in my family will be unmarried if I can help it. You need to

    make your future. You』re a duchess, Rotrind. There』s an entire duchy

    counting on you to do what』s best for them. And there』s your family

    counting on you to do what』s best. You may not agree, but this is what is

    best for you. I have already arranged with the king』s own seamstresses to

    make your wedding dress and the best chefs in the court to make your

    wedding cake. And you will not have to see Castello much. He will mostly

    be away at court conferences.」 Seeing the horrified look in Rotrind』s eyes,

    he mentally congratulated himself for avoiding telling her until the

    wedding preparations were already underway.

    「But still, Father, it seems as bad as a punishment!」 Rotrind said, her

    eyes growing watery and her voice quivering.

    「And perhaps it is. I have heard that you are not doing well in your

    studies,」 Sir Richard said coldly. Rotrind, struggling to keep her voice

    from quaking, implored,

    「But how could you say that, Father? You have never been like this to

    me before.」

    「You will marry Castello and that is final!」 Sir Richard bellowed.
    「Now out of my room!」

    Rotrind dashed away, sobbing uncontrollably, and did not hear

    anybody else』s footsteps except her own. She was disturbed by Fortindo』s

    voice saying, 「Is anything wrong, milady?」

    「Oh…hello, Fortindo,」 Rotrind said, wiping her tears away with her

    sleeve.

    「Here, perhaps this might help,」 Fortindo said, handing Rotrind a

    pretty damask handkerchief. Rotrind wiped the rest of her tears away and

    handed the handkerchief back to Fortindo.

    「Thank you,」 Rotrind said.

    「Now, as I was asking, is anything wrong?」 Fortindo asked.

    「Everything is wrong,」 Rotrind said, her eyes beginning to water up

    again, 「my father has commanded me to marry that horrible pig

    Ferdinand Castello, and he shouted at me as if he does not love me

    anymore.」
