[edit] History

Each train consists of 8 cars. The first 3 sets (numbers 2001-2003) were built in Japan, the next 6 sets (2004-2009) were delivered in complete knock down form and assembled by CSR Sifang Locomotive and Rolling Stock. The remaining 51 sets (2010-2060) were built by Sifang through technology transfer from Japan.

The first train arrived at Qingdao port on March 8, 2006 with little fanfare, and was not even publicized in China. These trains have a maximum operation speed 250 km/h (155 mph), and started providing high-speed train service from April 18, 2007, the date of the sixth national railway speed-up.

According to Chinese and Japanese media, CRH2 trains started test trials ahead of commercial operation on the Shanghai-Hangzhou and Shanghai-Nanjing lines on January 28, 2007.

The Ministry of Railway in China ordered 60 sets of CRH2 trains from Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Japan, along with Bombardier's Regina-based CRH1, Siemens's Velaro-based CRH3 and Alstom's Pendolino-based CRH5.

During the test on 22 April 2008, upgraded CRH2C trains reached a top speed of over 370 km/h (230 mph) on Beijing-Tianjin high-speed rail. [1]

As of October 2009, The Ministry of Railways in China has signed a new contract for 140 new 350km/h capable high speed trains with Nanche Sifang Locomotive, through a technology licensing agreement with Kawasaki Heavy Industries. This will comprise of 100 16-car sets, and 40 8-car sets.[2]
[edit] Fleet

At the time of the sixth national railway speed-up, at least 37 CRH2 sets had been delivered by Kawasaki and Sifang.[3]

Units with standard compartments were formed as follows:

    * ZE 20xx01 - Driving trailer, second class
    * ZE 20xx02 - Intermediate motor, second class
    * ZE 20xx03 - Intermediate motor, second class
    * ZE 20xx04 - Intermediate trailer with pantograph, second class
    * ZEC 20xx05 - Intermediate trailer, second class with restaurant
    * ZE 20xx06 - Intermediate motor with pantograph, second class
    * ZY 20xx07 - Intermediate motor, first class
    * ZE 20xx00 - Driving trailer, second class

There are some CRH2s using non-standard compartments which consist of more first-class seats. For example, unit CRH2-043 has 4 first-class cars.

Sifang designed a variant of CRH2, also known as CRH2C, which has maximum operating speed up to 300 km/h by replacing two intermediate trailer cars with motored cars. The first batch of 300 km/h trains were rolled out from Sifang plant on December 2007, and expected to be running on Beijing-Tianjin Intercity line, along with German CRH3 trains.

[edit] History

In November 2005 the Ministry of Railways ordered 60 Velaro trains for use on the Beijing-Tianjin high-speed rail line. The first three were built in Germany by Siemens, and the rest are being built partly by Tangshan Railway Vehicle and in Germany.

On July 27, 2006, the joint project office was opened at Tangshan.[3] Of the German trains, the first one was shipped from Bremerhaven on December 19, 2007.[4] The first Chinese-built CRH3 was unveiled on April 11, 2008.[5]

In March 2009, a new contract was signed with China Northern Railways (CNR) to supply 100 x 16-car trainsets for 39.2B RMB with delivery from Oct 2010 onwards. This order for a total of 1600 railway cars is greater than the total production of all Velaro and ICE trains that have ever been manufactured in the past. It is planned that the trains will be produced by CNR subsidiaries, Tangshan Railway Vehicles and Changchun Railway Vehicles, using technology from the previous technology transfer agreement.
[edit] Design

The 8-car trains are similar to the Velaro E design in Spain, but 300 mm (11.8 in) wider to fit more seats in a 2+3 layout; a 200 m (656 ft) CRH3 train will seat 548 passengers: 16 deluxe class (only 8 of them sold public), 50 in first class, 490 in second class.[1]

The trains are designed for running at 350 km/h (217 mph). On June 24, 2008, a CRH3 reached a top speed of 394.3 km/h (245 mph) during a test on the Beijing to Tianjin high speed line.[6]

[edit] Train series number

Not all trains in service are numbered CRH3C. Trains imported are numbered as CRH3A. They are CRH3-002A, CRH3-003A and CRH3-004A. The first Chinese made CRH3 was numbered as CRH3-001C. Later Chinese made trains are numbered as CRH3-005C, CRH3-006C, and CRH3-007C.
