The Canadian Tulip Festival is denying allegations of censorship for the last-minute cancellation of a performance by a marching band of Falun Gong practitioners.
Marketing Director Doug Little tells CFRA News the group downplayed the fact that they were Falun Gong protesters when they signed up to perform for the Festival launch last Friday.
Little says Parliament Hill is available for protests, but the group can't perform at the Canadian Tulip Festival under the terms they registered.
Falun Gong is banned in China.
A spokesperson for the spiritual practitioners say they were scheduled to perform until Festival officials saw their Falun Gong uniforms. The group claims pressure from the Chinese Embassy caused the Tulip Festival to uninvited them to perform.
The Tian Guo Marching Band says organizers accused them of misrepresenting themselves and had police escort the members from the festival site.
They are demanding the festival apologize and allow them to play their remaining engagements.
