A postdoc in our department performed out a few interesting experiments recently and prepared a manuscript for publication. After reading the manuscript, his boss (as a corresponding author) added another person's name as a co-author. This person is a PhD student in the lab, who simply cannot get anything useful out of his bench work (or put this way, nothing seems to work in his experiments). The reason his name has been included in the manuscript is that the boss wants his PhD student to have at least something to show, which will help him graduate in due course. The postdoc feels being used, but is hopeless about it. What a shame.
In essence, this boss wants to see his PhD student graduating in time, or he will lose face (ie, showing no ability to train PhD student successfully).
