It's no secret that most busy American mothers use the TV set as a live-in babysitter. In some households the tube holds a child's attention for the odd half hour or two while mom works on dinner; in others it is the child's constant daytime companion. Is there any harm in this?
Debate rages over the question, and periodically research is published showing that TV reduces attention span, makes children jumpy or inclines them to violence. In today's cartoon David Horsey makes fun of the claims of "children's TV", the special programming that supposedly uses entertainment to help youngsters to learn to read and take their first steps in the big, diverse world outside their family. What do children really get from this programming?
Horsey's suspicion is that children's programming chiefly turns kids into TV addicts, not into readers or happy mixers. The toddler in the cartoon, still at the age of pacifiers and stuffed animals, is held spellbound by the figure on the screen. What is the stimulating message of this creature specifically designed to fascinate small children? "Can you say TV?" The sooner the kid learns the word, the more effectively he can remind -- or nag -- his mother to turn on the boob tube.
A child hooked on TV is a viewer open to commercial messages, and there are plenty of those targeting children of all ages. Thus, at the very least, mom's search for peace and quiet sets the stage for her child's transformation into an American consumer -- and, of course, soaks up time that could be used for other, perhaps more desirable, transformations.
Actually anything has advantages and disadvantages, TV to children is no exceptional. If we take positive attitude to TV properly, for instance, let them watch, however; we need to set time limitation, you can have them watch series TV, too. Half hour or One hour per day helps them grow healthily, on weekends you could let them watch a little bit more.
My children love to watch "Finger tips" "Dora the explorer", "care bears", "bugs bunny and tweety show" and so on. They learn a lot from them. They also learn many stories from TV. For me, because nobody helps me, when I cook, I have to ask them do something; one of them is watching TV.
However, some children are addicted into TV, that's another thing. we should treat them differently.作者: cwjjzhou 時間: 2005-12-23 08:57
Young children live in their own worlds. They see the same people everyday, do the same things and eat the same foods. Maybe they put ketchup or ranch dressing on pasta or pancakes and that』s considered normal ― in their little worlds.
Generally, all this routine is considered good because it makes children feel safe and comfortable with themselves and their loved ones.
A sheltered life, though, can have consequences later, both socially and academically.
A new book and a new TV show both tackle diversity, couched in characters and words that kids can already relate to.作者: bluepolish 時間: 2005-12-24 12:17
i learned voilin as kid, my parents sold out the only TV for concerntrating my study and bought the new one which they did lock the plug by traditional lock, but i still learned how to watch TV with that little barrier without their notice.
i of course, have not completed that voilin study for no talent in that area i think.
But, what i wanna say is there is limitation for everything. for non native speaker, we also requested to watch TV or moive to enhance our aural skill, how can we say its harmness for ELS?
we feel cheer up after watch some comedy or soup series, feeling bored or too exhuasted.
whatever we try to do stop getting square eye and being narrow mind if only sticking to that little TV.
