Heavy duty compressors in process services

A dropping area

adeley I don't think a dropping area is necessary for any crane.
I think a dropping area is to facility manual unloading or loading.

tempax to adeley

echommm surprised!
那這段with vehicular access at grade 該如何譯?

adeley 關鍵詞是at grade

Am I right, Tempax!

tempax TRY
A dropping area shall be provided in the house with vehicular access at grade.

The level at which the ground surface meets the foundation of a building.

To the tune of a washing silk stream
  Poem by Yan Shu
  Translation by Yang Zhiming

  In my old small garden,
I am enjoying a cup of wine,
while a maid singing a new melody,
And the weather like last year』s so fine.
I cannot but ask the setting sun,
  「When will you appear again?」
  Then I only find,
  The flowers are helplessly falling,
  Seemingly familiar swallows returning;
Myself on a petal covered path strolling.
  Translator』s notes:

1.浣溪沙(huan4xi1sha1) same as 浣紗溪 (huan4sha1xi1)「A Silk- Washing Stream」, was a title of a piece of music produced in the music institute of Tang Dynasty. And it was based on the story of Xishi, (a charming beauty who washed silk in the stream.). It was used as a lyric genre title in Song Dynasty. A lyric at the very beginning could be sung as a song so it had the music to go with it. Then a lyric was written according to the music and vice versa. Therefore a lyric genre title was chosen generally according to the content of the lyric. But later on a lyric was written only in line with a lyric genre title and this title gradually became indifferent to the content of the lyric except the patterned poetic form including rhyme, rhythm and fixed number of words with a certain ping1ze4 scheme.

2.香徑(xiang1jing4),( literarily a fragrant path ) a path covered with fallen petals.

  Commentary:

A.E. Housman, a celebrated English poet compares writings of poetry to the secretions of an injured oyster, which result in a pearl. Indeed this piece is one of the brightest pearls in over 100 lyrics composed by Yan Shu. Its diction is as simple as everyday language without anything overwrought. But the theme and imagery it creates are profound.

In this lyric the poet shows his mood through a picture in which at sunset flowers are falling and some swallows are back to their old nest, which tells that another year is over and things will soon start anew again.

In the first stanza the persona takes pleasure in a cup of wine while listening to his maid singing a new song as he wonders when the sun will come back after it is set. In the second stanza he realizes that a new year begins as the swallows are back and flowers wither though once they are in blossoms.

The poet enjoys a great popularity for the couplet: 「The flowers are helplessly falling, Seemingly familiar swallows returning;」 in which a kind of philosophy of life is implied. And a reader could easily find it out as he knows clearly that the 「flowers』 falling and the swallows』 coming 「 is governed by the law of nature. In natural world when it happens like this it can』t help. However once flowers, 「symbol of beauty」, vanish it does not mean the world will be into the ewigkeit for something gorgeous may be revealed. And this revealment is not a simple repetition of the past but it is something 「Seemingly familiar」. The whole world goes and all creatures evolve in this direction. Who knows it is not a blessing in disguise. So is in human world. During one』s life there is always something helpless. Towards disasters like recent tsunami in Indian Ocean we feel helpless, to life itself we are so weak that we cannot control it as it has ups and downs and sometimes it is very short when death comes suddenly. Still we could benefit from a lot of good things while alive and 「Seemingly familiar」 dreamland could appear once a while as long as we treasure all little pleasures of life. Is the persona thinking about all this while he is pacing to and fro his passageway full of dead flowers?

  About the poet:
Yan Shu (991-1055), was a native of Linchuan, Fuzhou (present-day Fuzhou, Jiangxi Province). It is said that he began writing essays when he was only 7, for which he won all the admirations as he was considered as a prodigy. He won a title of Jinshi at the age of 14. Then he was promoted to a position of an official in charge of imperial mandate and became the prime minister when the emperor Renzong was in power. Since he was so successful in his civil service that he had lived a noble and happy life throughout his 64 years in this world.

As he was recognized for his talents in writing when he was a child he had made one of the most outstanding lyric composers and great scholars in early Northern Song Dynasty. His lyrics are largely concerned about love, wine drinking, outing and things of a fine life. The diction of his lyrics is beautiful, the sound harmonious, the craftsmanship sophisticated, and the imagery fresh and lively.

Well, if you don't know the meaning of it, how come you would know the answer? It is really beyond my ken.

zhangluo dear rovi297, thank you for your question

We did make our comforts and discomforts known, but basically others dictated our experience to us.

the two words "known" and "dictated" are not given in the original sentence. i was asked to choose the right one from the 4 given choices. as you know, there always is a " key to exercises" section in a exercise book. My wife's book was divised by a famous professor of Peking University, maybe i should not doubt its keys.

We did make our comforts and discomforts known, but basically others dictated our experience to us
1.』make sth done』 is a set pattern, 『known is a past participle modifying comforts and discomforts』
2. the past form 『dictated』 agrees with its main clause in the tense, and its collocation is 『to』 as well

zhangluo thank you, ruotong

i really appreciate your help, but i want to know the meaning of the sentence, exactlly speaking, the translation of the sentence, not the explanation of the keys.

silverbullet Re

Get the shaft means " to be cheated or deceived".
But maybe context or more details are needed.

imnoabrainer shaft

Shaft has an vulgar origin.
Perhaps, a thousand kicks in the ass is the equivalent to a shaft, or less!
some people get the gold and some get the shaft = Some people receive praises and rewards while others receive a kick in their asses.

tumujerome get the shaft = get unfair treatment

shaft = arrow
to shaft v. => to shoot an arrow

- Based on Longman Dictionary

freakyqi those meanings are correct...

"Some people get the goldmine, some poeple get the shaft"

"shaft" can also mean

A "shaft" describes many long things. It can also be a long empty space for something to go through. In a mine (digging underground for gold, silver, iron, etc) workers go up & down a "mineshaft".

So here it means that some people get the gold (or goldmine), while others worked hard but got nothing but the dirty empty shaft.

Or, how about:

What can book reading do for your Oral English?
lilianzh To improve Oral English

I long for the experiences from all of you on how to improve the Oral English from Medium to High level. I have been working with Foreingers for all most 4 years in foreign company. The major daily communications were in English whatever oral or writing. But I still feel my English was just combined with simple English sentences, with several common words perhaps, with short answers. I really want to express my ideas and thinkings more accurately and exactly.

Would you please help me?

karenb Well, since the topic of this particular forum is "book reading"

I'm going to suggess that one of the best ways that you can improve your oral English (and your other English skills) is by reading books. Become an English "bookworm".

I also recommend that you find books written in the past 50 years, which is a little difficult to do in China, because what's usually available in the bookstores are the "classics" -- although these are often good stories, the problem is they use archaic English, which isn't used today.

What can book reading do for your Oral English?

1) Increase your vocabulary
2) Improve your ability to express yourself in a natural way in English
3) Improve your grammar
4) If you read novels, you can pick up idioms and such from the dialogs.

I had a terrible week last week! I oredered a pizza. When it arrived I opened the lid. There was no pizza inside. It was stuck to the lid! Then, even worse, my favorite uncle died! At the funeral they opened his coffin. He wasn't there. He was stuck to the lid.

peihai1994 What is the meaning of "the stuck to lid"

Would you like to tell me,

pullmyfinger stuck to the lid

stuck means glued. Sometimes in the west when you get your pizza home the soft melted cheese gets glued to the lid. So I guess the uncle was all rotten and gross and his dead body got glued to the lid of the coffin.

無論是
Dare to try/Dare to lead!/and also Dare to win!!
還是Dare to be a leader
Dare to try ,dare to succeed(也是給買車人的鼓勵)

2 you are not living your truth

If you want what visible reality can give you,
You』re an employee.
If you want the unseen world,
You』re not living your truth.
Both wishes are foolish,
But you』ll be forgiven for forgetting.

That what you really want is你真正需要的是
love』s confusing joy.
And gamble everything for love,
If you』re a true human being.
If not leave this gathering.
Half-heartedness doesn』t reach into majesty.
You set out to find God,
But then you keep stopping for long periods.
At mean spirited roadhouses.

The development of science and technology has brought great advances to mankind, and on its wake, also many dilemmas for mankind』s continuing progress. For instance, contributions of science and technology are matched by their potential harm, modern science and technology is posing new and challenging ethical issues, traditional ethics is being eroded and slowly relegated to oblivion, man is being inevitably alienated from his surroundings and systemic risk is on the rise etc,.
Therefore, a good understanding of the relationship between science and ethics, their mutuality and harmonious development is necessary for mankind to achieve sustainable growth that is inclusive and balanced.
Science workers must establish an ethical value system which is beneficial to mankind; it is the only choice.

leungshuren I don't see any Chinglish

All of your sentence translations are wonderfully grammattical. I thought Chinglish usually involved some twisted grammar mixed with Chinese culture or idioms. So there seems to be no Chinglish here.

The only comment I have is that #8 needs to use the word "deceased", which means dead, not cease, which means to stop doing something (but does not apply to living).

qimingfu (oedipusqi) Thanks for your overall responses ,cordial chaps. Also I make an apology at the false one as Leungshuren picked out .

Long ago I had intention to select some sentences easily colored with chinglish and post here . In order to avoid first impression of false answers , I then just gave out the right ones . That is the reason it arose in your heads .

The thread will be continued , I look forward to more comments on them .

spider007 More chinglish sentenses

People mountain, people sea.

They sounds more like jokes.

freakyqi Thank you qimingfu - you're helping me learn Chinese!

It's very difficult. Even if we know what the characters are, we cannot always directly translate them. Chinese is a very difficult language, but I'm going to keep at it! It's difficult, but luckily it's also fun!

qimingfu (oedipusqi) no problem ! I will do what i can do for you.

Please review my English and give me advice .

China has rich water , grassland, and sloping land resources which have great potential for exploitation.
Or using "be rich in " structure as above."

--In English we would commonly say "China is rich in water, grassland, etc..."

#2 - "Hale" is a good word for writing a story, and maybe it is used often in the UK or Aust., but it's not used in everyday speech in the US. Some people who are not well-educated might not even know what it means. It's a good word though.

#5 - "His left leg is lame." is a bit shorter and more likely to be said.

#13 - "naked eye" not "eyes" - I'm really not sure why, but that phrase is ALWAYS "naked eye", never plural! I know, I know, we have two eyes! Don't ask me why!

Your English is very good!

you said:
"Long ago I had intention to select some sentences easily colored with chinglish and post here . In order to avoid first impression of false answers , I then just gave out the right ones . That is the reason it arose in your heads ."

Just a few tiny things I would do:
Long ago I had THE intention to select some sentences easily colored with chinglish and post THEM here. In order to avoid first impressionS of false answers, I (no "then") just gave out the right ones. That is the reason it arose in your heads.

Of course I wouldn't capitalize, I did that so you could see the changes. The last word could also be "minds". These are all very small changes. Judging from your writing, you sound very intelligent.

qimingfu (oedipusqi) I learn more from your great amendments . Merry Christmas , Freakqi.

A hard season there , isn't it ?

freakyqi Yes...
It's a busy season! Everyone is trying to shop for presents and food... and make food, all while still working. People try to get off work early or skip a day if they can, so they can get things done. I had off earlier this week, so I did all my shopping in one day. It was great to do it during the day when most people are working. The stores are too crowded at night or on weekends, I won't even go at those times!

I think people buy too much. Some people think they need to buy TONS of stuff for people, especially for kids, but I think many people go overboard.

qimingfu (oedipusqi) More to come...

We adopt the policy of regional autonomy in places where are prevalent in ethnic minorities . These region have witnessed continued economic and social development.

We are going in the right direction , firm in conviction, steady in our steps , gradual in our approach when carrying out the reform and opening-up and that we have achieved tremendous successes.

Joint venture should abyde by (observe) the laws, decrees and pertinent regulations of the People's Republic of China.

Or All activities of a joint venture shall comply with the provisiones of the laws,...

It's not easy to master acupuncture unless after using painstaking effort.

Or The mastery of acupunsture is not easy and requires painstaking effort.

The frogs that crouched among the reeds were shouting in their full efforts(ethusiastically).

My working experience in the twenty years teaches ( shows, demonstrates, indicates) that practice makes perfect.

Our purpose is clear, how to initiate it? We must follow an open policy both international and domestic ,observing the laws governing social-economic development.

How are we go about achieving these goals? We must observe the laws governing social-economic development and follow an open policy both international and domestic.

braveheartcn Chinglish is my old friend. ^_^

freakyqi
Here's a few comments, but remember, I can't understand all the Chinese, so I don't know how ACCURATE the translation is, I just know what sounds awkward or better in English:

18. the second one sounds better. The first one isn't too bad, but the second one is easier to understand.

19. The second one is better.

20. We wouldn't say "in their full efforts". We might say "enthusiastically". Or maybe "...with all they had"... depends on how you want to sound... poetic, simple... ?

21. Twenty years of experience has taught me 'practice makes perfect'.
or
"Twenty years of experience has shown me that practice makes perfect."

22. Our purpose is clear, how to initiate it? = Our purpose is clear, and how shall we initiate it?
Or use your whole second choice. It's very good.

qimingfu (oedipusqi)
First , Freakyqi , please accept my sincere compliments in this specila festival , to you and your kindred.
Though after an odyssey of less a score springs and winters , I should regretfully accept the fact that fluent English needs a long run ahead . To emulate the natives is not very easy . Thanks to your valueless instructions , i may enter into a fresh watershed to exploit treasures in English . In your convenience , please practice further more . If so , some visitors and i will benefit from your words .

qimingfu (oedipusqi)
They are different from ours in the way they think , the way they do things and their traditional habits.
The way they think , the way they do things and their traditional habits are different from ours.

freakyqi
Instead of "traditional habits" it is simpler and more common to say "traditions".
Also, there is no space before a punctuation mark, just after.

qimingfu wrote:
"They are different from ours in the way they think , the way they do things and their traditional habits.
The way they think , the way they do things and their traditional habits are different from ours."

In the first sentence, you cannot say "different from ours" because the sentence didn't yet say what is different. You can say "different from us". In the second sentence you CAN say "ours" because it's the traditions, etc you are refering to. I'm not sure I explained that well, sorry.

Anyway, both sentence constructions are fine.
I'd say either:
"They are different from us in the way they think, do things, and in their traditions.
or
The way they think, do things, and their traditions are all different from ours."

I guess you could say "act", but that might refer more to their personalities and social habits, like "behave" or "behavior". "Do things" would include how they do business, do household chores, cook, everything. It depends on what the original intention of the sentence is.

Section B Translate the following passage into English. (15%)

As my daughter is growing up, I find that she is obviously more attached to her daddy than to me. When she has something delicious to eat, she always remembers to keep some for her daddy, but seldom thinks of me. Every time we go out and take photos, she always presses her face on her daddy's, hugging tightly, leaving me alone aside. Previously when she was asked 'who is good, daddy or mummy', her answer is always 'daddy'. Later, having been taught by my husband, she now turns to answer 'both are good'. Last September, we moved to a new house and bought two room plants, which we called small trees. Since he thought the function of plants do great good to enhance the air quality inside, my husband bought one more plant home, but I thought it was unnecessary and the china vase containing the tree looked vulgar. The next day after my husband went out for work, my girl went to tell me, 'mummy, what a nice tree!' Then I was so surprised by her childish word for her daddy. My husband is so busy for the decoration of the new house that I invited my parents home for help. One day, smiling, my mother said to me, 'Girl, you will have a tough time in the future.' In fact, she was worried that my girl will help her daddy to 'bully' her girl.

imho excellent job!
(on your coat tail

My daughter became more attached to her father than to me as she was growing up. Whenever she tasted a delicious food she would ask me to reserve a portion for her dad. Meanwhile, she showed less concern about me. When we go out to take photos, she would hug her daddy tightly and press her face on her daddy's, and would have forgotten me for the moment. My daughter used to answer "daddy" when asked "whom would you like more?" Later, persuaded by my husband, she adopted a new answer "daddy and mommy". Last September, we bought two indoor plants after having moved into our new house. We called the plants "little trees". My husband believed that the presence of indoor plants would improve air quality because of the photosynthesis processes in progress. So he brought home one more plant which I felt unnecessary. I disliked the out-of-fashion look of the vases that held the plants. The next day, after my husband went to work, my daughter said to me: "Mommy, how pretty the little tree is!" Wasn't she trying to help her daddy? My husband was too busy to take care of the remodeling and decoration of our new house so he invited my parents to come over to help. After a while, my mother joked with me: "Daughter, you will have a tough time!" She was worrying about an alliance in the family between my daughter and her daddy.

Mind you there're plenty of native English speakers on this board in case you didn't know. In the U.K., even a garbageman or a janitor can speak fluent English.

"idomatic" English?
Agree! "Idiotmatic" translation needs pay no heed to Chinese Characteristics, but "idiomatic" translation does!
=====================
A good example of "Idiotmatic" English :How can we be so mechanic in translating from Chinese into English?

Pay no heed even to English grammar!
=====================
Another example: Pragmatic innovation, professional perfection!
come on! Just come up with your translation!

Total disregard of the intented meaning conveyed by the source document nor respect paid to the punctuations used therein.
=====================
Guess what sounds the loudest? No prize for the correct answer!

rovi297 hehehe, innoabrainer, you hit the nail on the head, hehehe

jollygoodguy hey guys!

The party is over.

There is nothing wrong wit the sentence" How can we be so mechanic (or mechanical, the same meaning) in translating from Chinese into English?".

well, if you guys like, pragmatic, innovative, professional, perfect, this is your choice. But just imagine what good does it make to make a list of four adjectives and tell people that is your company motto. It just does not make any sense.

I don't know what you are up to! If you have native speakers around you, go ask them. I don't see how I can continue to talk to a brick wall.

onepastyoung
On the contrary, a company motto need not be a full sentence but can comprise just four adjectives:

XXX Company - Pragmatic, Innovative, Professional, Competent

all of which tell us the qualities of the company. This is perfectly understandable, perfectly acceptable, and so thoroughly modern. Remember, we live in the age of PowerPoint and phone messaging, and such short blips of information are typical of the times.

rovi297 Well said, very well said, onepastyoung

jollygoodguy hahaha!

I did not say that it has to be a sentence.

Nothing essential is lost in my translation of the Chinese orginal.

A company should strive for pragmatic innovation and professional perfection. A company does not need to make a point of saying that they are pragmatic and professional, these are the prerequisite for a company to exist.

onepastyoung Surely there's no reason for "ha, ha,ha"?

It doesn't matter what you (or I) may think a company should do or be to exist. The four words are what the firm wants to say representing the image the enterprise wants to project: Pragmatic, Innovative, Professional, Competent.

Also, if you look at many state-owned enterprises world-wide how can you say they are "professional" and "pragmatic"? Yet these companies surely exist. Family and village enterprises are usally not "professional" and seldom "pragmatic" yet they exist.

I came across this translation on the Internet. I made a search, found several more, and finally traced it back to the blog of 我欲因之. There is good indication he/she is the original translator. (He/she because I cannot tell from the blog what his/her real identity is. In the blog he/she claims to be a "he" and is "7 year old." Of course that can't be true.)

(Some of you would remember that 金庸 used that in one of his stories.)

English version, translated by 我欲因之

What is love?
I ask the world?
How does it make me care less about my life
and care more about being with you?

Those two birds have been flying, north and south ?
How many winters and summers have they been together?
Happy to be with you
Lonely to be without you
How many men and women are stuck in this "love"!

My dear, you tell me
Those clouds extend millions of miles
That snow covers thousands of mountains
Without you, where shall I go?

Between North and South are two geese flying together,
How many winters and summers have they flown?
With the joy of meeting and the pain of parting,
These two spoonies still come closer and closer.

Dear, you should have a message for me,
With the floating clouds in the vast sky,
And the dusk snow on a thousand mountains,
To whom will this lonely figure go forward?

y2005: Nicely done, howard.

To Uncle Yeti: 我欲因子 perhaps is a 「he」 who is not 7 but about 27 years of age. The original poem is very moving. Here is a try based on the translation of 因子.

To the world I ask,
What is love
That makes me long for you only
Through life and after, unto death?

Flying from north to south, this pair of geese
Wings aged together
After scores of winters and summers.

Joyful in company,
Sorrowed by separation,
It deepens more with the anguish of love.

So tell me, ahead lie
Thousands of miles of clouds, mountains and snow,
Alone, where will I go?

Yeti:
I find 我欲因之's work a rare gem. You guys may not believe this, but it is true that I am not good in translation from scratch. One reason is that my Chinese is weak. (Has been so since high school.) Without 我欲因之's work, I would have no inspiration. Howard's and y2005's also help in thinking along different paths. So, be it good or bad, here is my version. (Let's hope more people will join in the fun.)

What is Love?

What is love
Pray tell,
That makes death sweeter than surviving alone?
North and South they have long flown together,
How many summers and winters wingtip to wingtip?
Joy when together; dreary when apart.
How many others are likewise ensnarled?

Have you no word for me?
For the tens of thousand of miles of clouds,
and the thousands of snow covered peaks,
Whither should this lonely shell trudge?

y2005: Uncle Yeti, really cool!

pula: hehe..he always cool...

sophiar: Join the great fun

Rainlane does not lack bel-esprits, really appreciate the works above . Unlce Yeti, your work is so grace, like it so much.

Here try for fun~~ yeah, wish more mates join the fun

What is love?
Who can tell me?
Why I can』t live without it?
North and south the pair of geese fly
In bliss they live to old wings
How many summers and winters they string along with
Bright when together
Blue when apart
So sentimentally they love
So beautiful love becomes
How many others could be so lucky to have?
I am waiting for your word
I can alone to scale the tens of thousand of miles of clouds
and the thousands of snow covered peaks
But who will there for me in the end ?!

Yeti:
My interest in this poem dated back over 4 decades to the time when Jiang Yung 金庸 quoted it in one of his Condor" stories. By the time I was in my 4th year (undergrade), I have forgotten the whole poem, except for the first few words. One of my fellow overseas students happened to remember the whole poem and often teased me by not telling me what the rest of it was.

Several years ago at the Han Ying forum, over the course of discussion on something esle, I mentioned this and someone was very obliging in quoting the whole poem plus the story of the bird committing suicide. But it was not until 2 days ago when I finally came across an English translation.

When I tried for my own version, I had had some trouble with 就中更有痴兒女 since I had a very faint idea of what that meant. I had to rely on the interpretation of the other three attempts for inspiration.

sophiar: hehe, interesting

Glad to know your interesting story, Uncle Yeti.

I think here 就中更有痴兒女 means 其中有痴情的人, actually that is a old story. It is said that before there was a pair of geese, when winter comes they must fly to south, but this year, the female goose wounded , she can't fly any more, so the male goose , instead of flying to south, decided to stay with her . Finally winter came, also came the heavy snow and cold weather. In one morning, they freeze to death in their nest.

What a touching love story!

Travelling always side by side

how many years have this feathered couple shared?

No one else ____ willing to go, he offered to take the message.
A.was B.had been C.were D.being

It's such a lovely day! I wish we ___ to the beach, instead of having to stay here in the office.
A.will go B.go C.went D.have gone

hiy2004
being
went

kansiguizi
being
went

rovi297 it looks to me "A" and "B" seem ok too.....

hiy2004
No one else being willing to go, he offered to take the message.
=Since/Now that no one else was willing to go, he offered to take the message.

:-)

rovi297 I agree with your answer....
but please read my words very carefully....
"look and seem" and dot dot dot, it is an unfinished post yet.

imnoabrainer Try

No one else was willing to go, he offered to take the message.

It's such a lovely day!I wish we have gone to the beach, instead of having to stay here in the office.

No one else being willing to go, he offered to take the message.

分句 No one else being willing to go,語法上叫「獨立主格結構」。

adeley with or on?

The little boy on the beach had nothing ___ except a hat.
1. with
2. for
3. in
4. on

placid_mind It should be ON.

the sentence means ------The little boy is wearing nothing save a hat on his head.

hiy2004 has nothing on = wear nothing

with不對

edchan

in spite of = despite

in despite of = in defiance of,

As a preposition, despite is used alone to head a prepositional phrase (despite his concern; despite their intervention) and should not be combined with of (despite of this; despite of that, both of which are Nonstandard) except in the archaic in despite of, which is really a compound preposition with the noun despite in the middle: In despite of everyone』s urging, he chose not to comply. The more usual (and more widely appropriate) phrase (also a compound preposition) is in spite of, which can replace the preposition despite in all situations.

examples:

Despite the public rebuke, President Bush circumvented the judicial process and secretly authorized the National Security Agency to spy on thousands of individuals in the United States in defiance of the very court that issued a legal opinion saying the administration was already infringing on civil liberties in other domestic spy cases.

In despite of the bird flu outbreak in South East Asia the real killers are mosquitos which carry dengue fever.

Adeley:
sometimes and even often, you see "despite of" or "in despite of" in text/reference books and google using exeactly the same as "in spite of".
they are wrong.
As I told you many times before, you need to check out the sources.

I am in a better position to judge the books are wrong or not because I wrote for 30 years and I worked with professional writers because I am a scientist and engineer first, and a writer second. But we write half the time none the less. In my experience I saw many grammatical mistakes in print (not so with big companies with most having prof writers doing the checking and second writing--we write first, the prof writers refine, and then we re-check making sure they did not change the meaning.)

sentence 1. OPEC ministers begin meeting in Austria in a few hours awaiting the ministers' decision on what the future level of oil production should be.
OPEC ministers begin meeting in Austria in a few hours, the meeting will wait the ministers' decision on.....

sentence 2. Gun battles between Israeli troops and Palestinian gunmen have raided overnight in the West Bank and Gaza.

OPEC ministers begin meeting in Austria in a few hours awaiting the ministers' decision on what the future level of oil production should be.

The enemy fled in a panic, leaving behind a lot of dead bodies and weapons

arlarlay1980
sentence 1. OPEC ministers begin meeting in Austria in a few hours awaiting the ministers' decision on what the future level of oil production should be.

sentence 2. Gun battles between Israeli troops and Palestinian gunmen have raided overnight in the West Bank and Gaza.
(我覺得這裡指BATTLE HAVE RAIDED THE W.B AND GAZA, 也就是槍戰突襲了W.B AND GAZA.

Gun battles between Israeli troops and Palestinian gunmen have raided overnight in the West Bank and Gaza.

Obsolete To lie in ambush for.

v.intr.(不及物動詞)
To wait.
等待
To be in store:
A busy day awaits.

OPEC ministers will begin meeting in Austria in a few hours, expecting the ministers' decision on what the future level of oil production should be.

gratewall
OPEC ministers begin meeting in Austria in a few hours awaiting the ministers' decision on what the future level of oil production should be.

我是把awaiting理解成修飾"a few hours" ,即await這個動作是a few hours 發出的.
Last year saw a soar in car sales. To be in a state of abeyance until: a contract awaiting signature.(待簽合同).

Last year saw a soar in car sales.」

my version:
Japan didn't request to be "a major political power" until 1983.
Japan didn't claim the title of "a major political power" until 1983.
Japan didn't pledge to be "a major political power" until 1983.

my version:
children health development level and nutritional situation in china have been ever--improved since china's implementation of the planning immunization for children in 1978.

as we advance our cultural relations, universities will again be a important vehicle of communication between chinese and americans, just as they were before.

planning改為planned好點.advance為develop,交流場所:platform for communication

maxzhy FYI
a major political power-->a political power.
children health development level and nutritional situation-->children's health and nutritution.
the planning immunization for children-->planned immunization for children

Below is an example:

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/quer ... 0&dopt=Abstract

qinger it's so nice to see your guys!

a major political power 和 a political power應該都可以吧?

It is not until 1983 when Japan put forward its idea of being a major political power.

Since China's implementation of children plan immunity in 1978, the health development and nutrition level have enjoyed a continued growth.

coolmax
my version:
Japan didn't request to be "a major political power" until 1983.
________
a major多餘。

Japan didn't claim the title of "a major political power" until 1983.
――――――

Japan didn't pledge to be "a major political power" until 1983.
――――――

Japan didn't reveal its intention of becoming a political power until 1983.

coolmax
children health development level and nutritional situation in china have been ever--improved since china's implementation of the planning immunization for children in 1978.

Chinese children began to enjoy increasingly-elevated(or: continuously-improved) health and nutrition conditions sine 1978, when china implemented its children immunization program.

gratewall

a place/platform for exchanges不對嗎?There're many ways to skin a cat!

qinger your opinions are so great !

we could gain more when we share ideas together.
particularly, i would like to thank coolmas for his analysis on my version of sentence 1.

qinger text for "vow" from dictionary

vow: v.) to make a serious promise to yourself or someone else.
phrase: vow to do sth
vow ( that )
example: he vowed to kill his wife's lover.
i vowed that i would never drink again.

第一句我把書上參考答案給大家吧: japan did not raise the issue of " becoming a major political power " until 1983.

verb: to make a determined decision or promise to do something: After the awful meals we had last christmas, I vowed to do more of the cooking myself.

gratewall

[the standard translation] japan did not raise the issue of " becoming a major political power " until 1983.

[a literal translation] japan, until 1983, did not make clear of its intention to become a "major political power."

「要做」是 (intend) to become.

it's a cliche that............(可能表現出不屑一顧)
it's a cliche that............(也是幽默的說法,就好比說『俗』話說。。)

there is a subtle difference between the transitive and intransitive verb improve. when used as transitive, improve means to make better or increase value. when used as intransitive, it means to advance or make progress. see below:

improve the general condition of health and nutrition in china

hiy2004 send someone home (military)?

有幾個流行說法:downsizing(縮減編製)、rightsizing(調整至合適的編製)、re-engineering(重整),例如:Repeated downsizing has left the company very lean indeed.(公司多次『瘦身』,現在是非常『苗條』了。) 炒魷魚英文也有多個說法:dismiss, sack, fire, terminate, make redundant, lay off。

He was sacked (= He was given the sack) for frequent absences at work.(他經常缺席,被炒魷魚了。)

Terminate, lay off, make redundant等是較新的說法。 I have been terminated / laid off / made redundant.(我被炒了魷魚。)

leungshuren Hmmm

Someone's reincarnation
I think this sentence has to do with being reincarnated in your next life, possibly as cattle, which is a hindu superstition. But my reading skills are very poor, so my translation may be quite incorrect.

A real man knows when to concede defeat.
A smart man knows when to hold, when to fold.(right?)
A smart man knows when to talk,/listen........
Thanks to all, especially rovi297, your version gives me inspiration.:-)

rovi297 well, that should be easy...

如「教育產業化」,「知識社會化」,「國民經濟信息化」就可以分別譯為 "(to build) a market-oriented education" , "(to build) a knowledge-driven society", 和 "(to build) an information-based national economy"。

如「保證決策的科學化,民主化」就可以翻譯成 "to ensure the decision-making more scientific and democratic"

「to bring younger people into the core of the leadership」或「to make the ranks of cadres younger in average age」,這樣才能真正傳達其本身的意思。
還有例子如:「國際關係民主化」,「科研成果產業化」就可翻譯成「to exercise(or to promote) democracy in international relations」,「to apply scientific research results to industrial production」。

junpearl
build up information systems for agricultural affairs

ptbptb
Chinglish?!

laoxianggg
Commercialization

a cartoon superhero

audreyxu
freakazoid is this man's name.
sth. like superman, spiderman. hero of a cartoon movie.

yawgmotha Texas Hold 'Em = a kind of poker card game...
if you ever have the chance to go to Las Vegas; you will know what it is.

Plato's Cave = In Plato's book, "The Republic", he described of a cave where men are forced to face the wall and they can only see the images reflected on the wall rather than the real thing itself. Behind them, there is a puppet master who makes these images. And behind him, there is also a fire. So in western cultures, to come out of "the Cave" means to discover the truth. But if you want to understand the full symbolism behind "the Cave" you should do some research on the internet because I don't really want to write my Philosophy 101 essay all over again.

Vibe = It means that you are fashionable or in sync with the current pop culture.
J-pop = Japanese pop music
Pitcher's duel = Basically just a one on one battle.

audreyxu
Plantagenet: Family name of a line of English kings from Henry II to Richard III (1154-1485).

hacktivist:one who combines hacking skills with activism in order to attack (as in, shut down or deface) certain Web sites as a form of political protest. Is is considered a form of electronic civil disobedience.

heroin chic:A fashion for pale, skinny models with dark sunken eyes and fine, blow-away hair gave rise to the term Heroin Chic. Much was made of the fact that the models looked ill because they really were taking lots of drugs and it was thought that they might encourage kids to do the same.

Only by continuous( insistent ) reform and innovation in theory, science and technology to create more breakthroughs, can our economy and society gain more power to develop forward, can we explore, intergrate and utilize human and natural resources to produce more material and cultural wealth to benefit human society.

i wish you could make my translation better. i look forward to your help. thanks !

only when insistent reform and innovation are made in theory, science and technology to give more creations and breakthroughs, ---
not ideal, waiting for others' versions---

qinger
produce more wealth to enrich our material and moral life?
accumulate more in material and spiritual civilization?

how many sentence patterns can you list out?

It will be nothing but more ongoing reforms and innovations as well as breakthroughs and creations in the fields of theories, science and technology that will further vitalize our economy and society, that will further enable us to explore, integrate, and utilize our human and natural resources to produce more material and cultural wealth to benefit the human society.

The Waiter Rule"
A high-powered American CEO once said the best way to sort good job candidates from bad is to take them out to lunch and see if they're rude to waiters.

Fair enough, but, catch up business world ----women have been using "the waiter rule" for years. Men being rude to waiters is a guaranteed deal breaker, a mistake equal to men suddenly announcing that they're only after a quick bit of fun.

Nor does it end there. Pity the poor man who believes they're just popping out for an "innocent" bite to eat. Restaurants generally, but particularly with early dates, are a clearing house for relationships----dreams smashed and reputations ruined even before the arrival of the bread sticks.

Despite this, it would seem that men and women have no idea how easy it is to fail the important restaurant audition. So allow me to explain. Some dinner deal breakers apply only for men, others apply to both sexes. Some male no-nos include: openly checking out other women in the room; ordering off-menu, or amending dishes to your own requirements' dividing the bill exactly in half on a first date or allowing the woman to pay for the entire meal.

Women screw up, too. Talking to men, the top female offence seems to be ordering food in a manner that shows they are clearly on one of those "low fat/no fun" diets, or even perhaps have an eating disorder. Other female mistakes include: arguing in a know-nothing way about politics and culture in an effort to appear "challenging"; showing men photographs of yourself as a child; and a sudden burst of weeping, usually prompted by alcohol.

Indeed, it gives me no pleasure to pass on news from my male sources of "Second Bottle of Wine Woman". This woman emerges when, three-quarters of the way through a meal, anew bottle of wine arrives. Suddenly, a glamorous, interesting woman truns into a "Drunk Bird". Typical behavior includes gesturing wildly with her hands to emphasize points, kicking her shoes off under the table (not always the table she's sitting at), and sobbing weirdly (over pet that died 15 years ago, man who betrayed her, or both). Unbelievable isn't it? All of which makes you wonder why anybody still bothers with the tradition of a supposedly romantic three courses.

Some of us are brilliant in restaurants, but others struggle horribly. To the point where a person could start thinking: dinner is too risky. The rest of us will just have to take our chances in that dangerous world of soft lights, napkins and menus, because, as all women know, the formula works ----restaurants are where the action starts. And if it all goes wrong, you can always go home with the waiter.

bansheekoala Reply #6 rovi297's post

    Silvio Gazzaniga

copchen the Hercules Cup
We all know that the FIFA world cup is in progress in Germany......Every football player dreamed to join the world cup and win the Hercules cup. ...

我覺得Jules Rimet Cup 和Hercules Cup都屬於World Cup Trophy,也就是說World Cup Trophy是個general word

Sarah Bernhard to Victorien Sardu

Wonderful Boy,

Where are you tonight? Your letter came only an hour ago-- cruel hour-- I had hoped you would spend it with me here.

Paris is a morgue without you: before I knew you, it was Paris, and I thought it heaven; but now it is a vast desert of desolation and loneliness. It is like the face of a clock, bereft of its hands.

All the pictures that hang in my memory before I knew you have faded and given place to our radiant moments together.

Now I cannot live apart from you-- your words, even though bitter, dispel all the cares of the world and make me happy; my art has been suckled by them and softly rocked in their tender cradle; they are as necessary to me now as sunlight and air.

I am as hungry for them as for food. I am thirsty for them, and my thirst is overwhelming. Your words are my food, you breath my wine. You are everything to me.

Your Sarah

Your translation is a little different than the ones that mention "fate" or "destiny." "Luck" means anything could happen—it's all a matter of chance. It's a little more optimistic, perhaps.

"Fate" or "destiny" imply that the result is inevitable—there is nothing the person can do to change the outcome. ("Fortune" is a little more than like "luck.")

If you have "sole" and "soulmate" together, it sounds a bit comical so I changed it to "my one and only" which can have the meaning of "one's only love."

My take on it:
I will look for my one and only soulmate in the vast crowd. If I make it, I am fortunate; if I fail in it, I am doomed.

Monk Behavior Analysis

shanjuan my picks

mentally free, and physically busy.

chinaiscool I like: 已婚風流派.
It's a more playful and less serious translation, which fits perfectly because the MBA "mistranslation" is meant to be playful anyway.

barcelona
In the dreams of the previous incarnation and this present life and during the process of being born again, what I just wait for is your transitory look back into me

In the dreams of my previous and present life, as well as in the course of samsara, your transitory look at me is the only thing I wait for.

In every dream I had in both of my last life and the present one, as well as during the time in-between, all i was and am waiting for is nothing but a smile from you.

rovi297 I have got something to do tomorrow.

nanogrok context?
Many ways to say it, for example,
I have/got to take care of something/a few things tomorrow.
I have something to attend to...
I have an engagement...

househusband
If you intend to decline an invitation, a request or other engagements, simply say "I won't be available tomorrow". Justifiably, privacy exampts you from any further explanation.

applesz "Something has come up" is better

hly2006 alt

I am busy tomorrow.
I am not available tomorrow.
