coming from helsingor via commuter train we arrived at Copenhagen central around 5pm. the ride was less than an hour. since our hotel is less than 1 km from the station we took a little walk. originally we planned to take a peek of the mermaid statue by utilizing the built-in free pass for copenhagen in our ferry/train combo ticket. but it was raining slightly and it seemed to be too dark already for that adventure. so we gave up on it. we then went down stairs to check out the lounge at our hotel, Marriott by the river. the food was plenty, but variety was lacking, so was the drinks. surprised there was no Carlsberg in the offering, there was plenty of royal okologisk classic to go around, I have never seen this one before, drinkable beer, I think it tasted slightly better than lager or pilsner type.

breakfast was on the house, decent enough. our luck for good weather didn't seem to work here, the day started out with a little drizzling. but we were well protected by our waterproof boots, wind/rain proof jackets, and rain cover pants. with a plastic cover for the stroller we had all our weak spots covered.
took a walk to the radhus and h.c. Andersen fairytale museum, passing the Carlsberg museum (not opened yet at that early hour). the radhus was impressive, however, the fairytale museum was closed for maintenance. it was a flashback for me to see that many people riding bicycles on the streets. when I lived in Beijing I rode bikes everywhere. so sad to see traffic jams everywhere in china, cars everywhere. from the radhus we turn onto stroget, the pedestrian street. it was a nice stroll along the street, watching stores and shops getting ready to open for business, also witnessing for the first time how the cobblestone roads were laid in at a construction site near that big fountain.
we then turned towards gammel strand, it was more quiet over here, not many people dashing around. since we are no shoppers we didn't spend much time here, right about the time we were to cross the bridge near that square with a big statue we saw a tour boat pulling into its station a few steps away, the little one wanted a ride, we also got tired of walking so it was not a tough decision. 80dkk pp for an hour, not bad. the tour covers many interesting parts of the city, complete with a closeup glimpse of the back of the mermaid statue and a great guide that did English, Italian, and Spanish in one shot. very informative, great value.
after we got off the tour boat, the little one wanted to go potty. in search of a toilet we wondered into a restaurant called American grill near nikolaj kunsthal (church). the young gentleman greeted was very friendly, we decided to have lunch there since it was about noon time. the food was pretty nice, the amount of food was a bit short for the price comparing to what we could get at home. but we knew this city is expensive to begin with so we were not surprised. seafood skewer 129dkk, shirimp/rice plate 139dkk, a 750ml beer 78dkk, a 300ml Italian bottle water 39dkk. the exchange rate indicated by my credit card statement seemed to be 1usd=6.9dkk.
after lunch we kept walking towards nyhavn and spent a little time there. the neighborhood was very nice to look at. by now the rain had stopped for a while already and the sun actually wondered out from the clouds from time to time, beautiful! from nyhavn we strolled towards the little mermaid statue passing by frederiks kirke and amalienborg, which we didn't bother to get in.
since we already saw the mermaid statue, although just the back, it was good enough for mommy and daddy. but it was not so for our 5 yearold. she insisted that we need to walk to the statue and take a good look - that mermaid is all she knew about Copenhagen. we finally made it, the little one was very happy and sang the ariel sang right on the spot, it was definitely the highlight for her out of the whole trip. the statue was small all right , but we knew before we went so we were not surprised. I also doubt very much a sea lion sized mermaid would make any sense.
we spent quite some time at the mermaid statue because the little one didn't want to leave. afterwards we took a stroll in the nearby kastellet fort. it was nice to walk around and saw the sunset at the fort. by now we were really tired of walking any more. we resorted to take the bus to the central station, bought our train tickets to hamburg for tomorrow morning, 989dkk for two the little one rides for free. we paid 24dkk each for the ride on the bus for six stops. looking back I think it would work better and more efficient if we rented bikes to get around.
we felt Copenhagen is a very beautiful city with lots interesting buildings to see. we could have easily spent another day here. I wanted also to take a look at the free twon Christiania, but my wife scared me out of it. the reviews on TA were also mixed. so in the end I didn't go. we enjoyed our time in Copenhagen. but it sure would be hard on my wallet if we ate and drank like we did at home.
