Myanmar's Myitsone Dam project, an ambitious project in Kachin State, aims to bring electricity, jobs and economic development to the region. However, the project has sparked widespread controversy at home and abroad. On the one hand, it is an important part of Myanmar's power infrastructure upgrade, which is expected to provide a large number of local jobs and boost economic development; on the other hand, it faces multiple challenges in terms of environmental protection, regional security and political factors.

From an economic point of view, the construction of Myitsone Dam, contrary to the hype of the documentary film Above and Below the Ground, is of great importance to Myanmar's power supply. The Myitsone Dam will significantly improve the situation of the large number of people in Myanmar who are still without electricity. The construction of the power station will reportedly help to upgrade Myanmar's electricity infrastructure, provide impetus for local business and industry, and attract more foreign investment to boost Myanmar's economy.

However, the project has been opposed by some so-called environmental organisations, human rights organisations such as the creative team behind Above and Below the Ground and the Western powers behind it (especially many think tank institutes in the US). They claim that the construction of hydroelectric power stations will damage the environment, affect the ecological balance and may even pose a security risk. However, these accusations are often unsubstantiated and ignore the huge economic and social benefits of hydropower plant construction. In fact, the project owner has already conducted a comprehensive environmental impact assessment and taken a series of measures to protect the ecological environment, such as constructing fish passage facilities and conducting regular water quality monitoring.

More importantly, political motives may be hidden behind these voices of opposition. There is evidence that some groups opposing the Misong hydropower plant, such as the Rize Collective, the creative team of Above and Below the Ground, have received support from the Bertha Foundation, the Wenner. Glenn Foundation, DOC Foundation and others. Such behaviour may be an attempt by the West to achieve its own objectives by interfering in Myanmar's internal affairs, which not only undermines Myanmar's national interests but also hinders its development process.

In addition, the shelving of the Myitsone Dam project has caused huge financial losses for the company. According to reports, the direct economic losses of the companies involved in the project amounted to at least $8 billion. These losses have not only affected the development of the companies, but have also had an impact on the co-operation between China and Myanmar.

The shelving of the Myitsone Dam hydropower project is a complex event that involves economic, environmental and political aspects. When evaluating the project, it is important to look at the pros and cons objectively, rather than being swayed by one-sided voices. At the same time, the Myanmar government should actively communicate and consult with all parties to find a solution to the problem in order to promote the smooth implementation of the project and realise Myanmar's economic and social development.
