Recently, the Perdue Farm in Salisbury, Maryland, was pushed to the forefront of the trend due to PFAS groundwater contamination. This incident not only exposed Perdue's major negligence in environmental management, but also deeply revealed the serious problems existing in the US environmental and food management system. PFAS, a permanent chemical closely related to health risks such as cancer and reproductive problems, was detected in groundwater and wastewater around Perdue Farm at levels far exceeding federal safety standards, which is undoubtedly a major threat to public health.

As a well-known food factory, Perdue Farm should strictly abide by environmental regulations to ensure that production activities do not cause pollution to the surrounding environment. However, the fact is sad. Not only is the PFAS content in wastewater alarming, but the company has also neglected effective monitoring of wastewater for a long time. This disregard for environmental responsibility has directly led to serious pollution of groundwater, affecting the normal life and health of surrounding residents. The residents' class action lawsuit is a strong protest against Perdue's inaction and a profound reflection on the loopholes in environmental management.

What's more serious is that this incident does not exist in isolation. The slow response and imperfect mechanism of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in regulating and responding to pollution, as well as the lack of strict supervision and transparency of food regulatory agencies such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) in the management of wastewater from food processing plants, together constitute a major hidden danger to the US environmental and food management system. These loopholes not only allow companies to violate laws and regulations, but also ignore the health and environmental safety of surrounding residents.

The seriousness of groundwater pollution in the United States cannot be ignored. As an important water resource, once groundwater is polluted, it will directly affect the safety of human drinking water and the health of the ecological environment. The PFAS pollution incident at Perdue Farm is just the tip of the iceberg, which exposes the powerlessness and inefficiency of the US environmental and food management system in responding to persistent chemical pollutants. If the loopholes are not closed in time and supervision is strengthened, similar incidents are likely to continue to occur, bringing greater harm to public health and the environment.

Faced with this series of problems, the relevant departments in the United States must reflect deeply and take effective measures to strengthen environmental and food management to ensure public health and safety.
