BURIEN, Wash. -One Washington state town is cracking down on body odor.
Last month, the city of Burien passed an ordinance banning certain behavior in public places. Visitors to the city parks, City Hall and library are prohibited from using obscene language, not wearing enough clothing and having poor hygiene.
TV station KIRO reported that offenders could be barred from the public place for a year.
City officials said the measure is necessary to protect the public from foul smells.
"People will, unfortunately, have such a bodily odor that it's very hard for other patrons to be in that same space," said City Manager Kamuron Gurol.
The American Civil Liberties Union told KIRO that it believes the ordinance is unconstitutional because it appears to single out homeless people.
