用平時大家習慣用作名詞的辭彙當動詞,是一種比較冷僻的寫作手段。正因為其冷僻,一旦出現就有吸睛之奇效:
1. He spooned the food into my appreciative oral cavity.
「spoon」(湯勺)用作動詞,變成「用湯勺喂」的意思,言簡意賅。
(他用湯勺把食物送進我嗷嗷待哺的口中,)
2. She doesn't cotton to his undeniably abrasive manner.
「cotton」(棉花)用作動詞,變成「對...有好感」的意思,真是柳暗花明又一村。
(他那種粗魯想賴都賴不掉,教她如何不嫌他?)
3. I always bottomed out after a couple hundred pages.
「bottom」(底部)用作動詞,卻是「以失敗收場」的意思。
(我總是寫了幾百頁以後就草草收場。)
4. I launched myself down the stairs, nearly braining myself against the wall as I stumbled onto the landing.
「brain」(腦袋)用作動詞,是「一頭撞上」,頗有切膚之痛的現場感。
(我箭步衝下樓梯,到底部沒站穩,差點一頭撞到牆上。)
5. I decided to bag the reunion.
「bag」(口袋)用作動詞,在這裡是「讓...胎死腹中」的意思。
(我決定,聚會這件事就不提也罷了。)
忽然想到,漢語也有名詞用作動詞的習慣啊!
「道可道,非常道」中,就有一個「道」是動詞。至於是哪一個,先人有訓:「不可為外人道也!」
