Ms. Chang discussed her latest book The Chinese in America: A Narrative History, published by Viking.
The book, a chronicle that spans 150 years and continues to the present day, covers the entire history of the Chinese in the United States. The author described the accomplishments of Chinese Americans, from the building of the transcontinental railroad to major scientific and technological advances. She also examined what it means to be an American and the "three pressures" now facing Chinese Americans: "the pressure to excel, the pressure to become white, and the pressure to embrace their ethnic heritage."
A question and answer period followed Ms. Chang's remarks.
