SECURITY concerns were raised at one of Cardiff』s leading concert venues yesterday after an audience member accosted one of the world』s greatest pianists on stage unopposed.
Chinese pianist Lang Lang was approached by the man during his performance at St David』s Hall on Sunday evening. The man, believed to be Chinese himself, climbed onto the stage, presented the classical star with a bouquet of flowers and began to speak to him.
Lang Lang walked off the stage without accepting the flowers and did not reappear for an encore.
The unknown man then shouted in Chinese to the rest of the audience while making a 「T」 sign with his hands, before finally being escorted off the stage by venue staff.
Some audience members suggested the man was asking Lang Lang to play politically sensitive songs at the event, possibly in connection with the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989.
No-one from St David』s Hall was available to comment last night due to the bank holiday.
One audience member, James Stewart, a journalism lecturer at the University of Glamorgan, spotted the spectator jump onto the stage and wedge a brown envelope in the piano during the mid-session interval.
He said when Lang Lang reappeared, he looked at the envelope for a moment before throwing it to one side.
「Imagine that was Katherine Jenkins and you were able to get that close to her,」 he said.
「The security response was absolutely ridiculous. He reached for his inside pocket at one point and I thought he was reaching for a gun.」
Another spectator added: 「We thought that it was a bit worrying that a man could just approach the stage like that and just jump up onto it with a bunch of flowers.
「It could have been something else, like a weapon or a gun. This is the first time that I have ever seen this sort of thing happen in a classical concert.」
Lang Lang, a 29-year-old classical pianist, began learning to play the piano at the age of two, following in the footsteps of his father, Lang Guoren. Lang Lang courted controversy in January after playing the theme song to the Korean War movie Battle on Shangganling Mountain, My Motherland, at a state dinner in the White House in honour of Chinese President Hu Jintao
