二、莫里森太太的願望莫里森伯爵是在第一次世界大戰結束不久從法蘭西遷到休斯敦的。市區西首不遠處離梅摩爾公園最近的一棟橘黃色外牆的豪宅就是他們的住家。
休斯敦市中心的街道都是順著梅恩大街修建的，南北向的跟它平行，東西向的跟它垂直。整個市區被切成方方正正的豆腐塊。誰也沒有追究梅恩大街的真正走向。可是如果站在梅恩大街和布法羅百幽河的交接點上，先是沿布法羅向西看，然後再沿著大街看兩頭，你會發現好似站在一支箭的箭頭上。布法羅是箭身，大街形成箭尖。這是因為梅恩大街從交點處向南向北都往西布法羅偏了30多度。
倒是布法羅兩岸蜿蜒向西的艾倫大道和梅摩爾車道的大方向反而是名副其實的從東到西，因為它們是沿著布法羅的走向修建的。

那是全美最大的市區公園之一。聽說公園所在地第一次世界大戰期間曾經是一個軍訓營。成千上萬的士兵在那兒接受訓練。一戰以後，那塊地先是被霍格（HOGG）家族買下來，到1925年才又轉讓給市政府。霍格家族以很低廉的價格賣給政府只有一個條件：把她建成一座對公眾開放的公園。這個公園叫做梅摩爾，就是為了紀念在一戰中犧牲了的士兵。梅摩爾，MEMORIAL的音譯，就是「紀念」的意思。
莫里森伯爵當年移遷休斯敦一點兒也不是因為休斯敦發現了大油田，他們是沖著那個軍訓營來的。
事情的原委是這樣的。伯爵除了一個女兒曾經有過三個兒子。一戰爆發以後，伯爵自己上了前線（所以許多人也稱他莫里森將軍），還把兒子們都送上了戰場。不幸的是，兩個兒子都在法蘭西的戰場上陣亡了，只有小兒子布魯斯被派到美國的軍訓營帶兵。未曾想當軍訓營的士兵們奔赴法蘭西參戰的時候，他們被告知小莫里森來到美國不久就染上瘟疫喪了命。
所以，雖說法蘭西是戰勝國，可是戰爭給莫里森家族卻留下了難以癒合的創傷。伯爵夫人一直不願意承認她的小兒子已經命喪黃泉，所以戰爭一結束，埋葬了兩個兒子的屍體，就找到當年的那個軍訓營來了。伯爵夫人沒有過多的奢望，她只是想活不見人，但是死得見屍。
光陰似箭。莫里森家族舉遷休斯敦一晃就是半個世紀。遺憾的是，伯爵太太的願望到臨死也沒有實現。（下一篇：三、瑪麗亞小姐）

- well, one of few good memories for huston is that memorial park. i used to hang around there with few friends at weekends..

when you drive around houston, you would see bayous everywhere, usually have no water or very little in them. but once raining season start, those bayous would be quickly filled up with flooding water. the problem for houston's bayou system is that it is kind hard for the system flash water out since houston area was a marshy land before.

houston floods every year during the raining seasons. bayous are key infrastructure to contain the flood...
well, the revival of the galveston has been in talks for years..
