New Bilingual drama by Yangtze Rep's Artistic Director Joanna Chan, commissioned by Hong Kong Repertory Theatre
American premiere
June 3 to 23, 2011
Theater for the New City, New York
"The Empress of China" is based on the story of the first trading ship from the US to reach China in 1784.
The play is an emotional voyage in which two worlds meet and find each other.
In the prosperous port of an ancient empire, during the powerful reign of Qianlong, handsome First Officer Samuel Shaw meets wealthy merchant's daughter Purple Lotus. Although few words are exchanged, they find each other through the language of faith and honesty.
Performed in English and Chinese with bilingual subtitles.
