From Revolution to Reconstruction: Presidents: George Washington
1. GEORGE WASHINGTON 1789-1797
George Washington was born in 1789. He was 6 foot 2 and weighed more than 200 pounds. On April 30, 1789, George Washington became the first President of the United States. "As the first of every thing, in our situation will serve to establish a President," he wrote James Madison, "it is devoutly wished on my part, that these presidents may be fixed on true principles."
Washington was the one man in American history who was bigger than the government itself; He was the hero of the Revolution and he could have been emperor of USA. But he ensured that government would remain in the hands of the people. Because of that, he made his most important dedision, leaving office after two terms and exemplifying a fundamental democratic ideal ... Washington made the presidency. Everyone who comes after him will follow his standard. He was the first.
For all of this, Washington has been looked by historians as one of America's greatest presidents. For me, I admired him was a real democracy soldier. He fought bravery for his dream of freedom and stood it without selfish. He set a good standard for all the future Presidents of USA, maybe for the whole world.
