Which of these two do you use more often?

Of these two words wander and ramble, which do you use more often when you want to say move about at random or without destination or purpose?

He wandered down the hall lost in thought.

"They would go off together, rambling along the river" John Galsworthy.

It seems to me the former is a more common choice while the latter is more for written or used more in novels rather than in conversation.
