Vocabulary and structure:

1) 「Very few showers and storms developing in the late evening and most of them are going to be tapering off right near sunset」

  • developing = starting
  • tapering off = finishing

Structure: WEATHER CONDITION developing WHEN and tapering off WHEN

 Ex: High winds developing later in the day and tapering off around midnight


2) "overnight less humid again" = less moisture in the air during the night


3) "overnight lows are going to be anywhere in the 70s...

temperatures are going to be in the mid-70s...

the lower 70s around Lutsen further north...

temperatures in the upper 60s further to the southeast...

around Arcadia Lake Placid expect temperatures near 70 degrees or just above...."

Structures used for talking about temperatures: 

TIME lows are going to be / TIME low is going to be 

o   Today』s low is going to be 34

·           Temperatures are going to be in the mid- NUMBERs

o   Temperatures are going to be in the mid-50s

·           The lower NUMBERs

o   It will in the lower 40s in New York

·           Temperatures in the upper NUMBERs

o   Temperatures in the upper 80s

·           Expect temperatures near NUMBER degrees or just above

o   Expect temperatures near 65 degree or just above/below that

* You can also change 『going to』 to 『will』 or use present simple 『is』 or 『are』

 

4) 「Tomorrow we』ll be reaching highs near 90 degrees a nice mix of sun and clouds with northeasterly winds on the light side」 

Structure: WHEN reaching highs near/of NUMBER degrees with/and WEATHER CONDITIONS

Ex. Tuesday reaching highs of 40 degrees with a mix of rain and sleet

 - sunny skies, cloudy skies, with a foggy conditions, partly cloudy

 

5) 「about a 20 percent chance that you』ll see showers or storms in your neck of the woods」

  •  In Your Neck of the Woods = where you live

Structure: About a NUMBER percent chance that you』ll see WEATHER CONDITION in your neck of the woods

Ex. About a 60 percent chance that you』ll see fog in your neck of the woods.

 

6) 「But you could get some heavy downpours or a few thunderstorms moving through as well」

heavy downpour – extremely heavy rain that usually doesn』t last for very long

Structure: Could get some WEATHER CONDITION moving through

EX. We could get some fog/rain/high winds/ thunderstorms/ showers moving through.
