譯事如房事，苦練房中術

有人說過，「譯事如房事，還是少說多練為好。」此語甚妙。我在拙文「翻譯三境界」里提出翻譯中最難境界是英翻中。許多人可能會對此論點不以為然。下面有十個句法簡單而且幾乎沒有生詞的句子，大家不妨試著看能不能將它們翻譯成符合國人思維習慣的通順流暢的漢語：

1. When it』s three o』clock in New York, it』s still 1938 in London.

2. Hollywood is like Picasso』s bathroom.

3. Los Angeles is seventy-two suburbs in search of a city.

4. New Orleans is the only city in the world you go in to buy a pair of nylon stockings they want to know your head size.

5. I woke up on the right side of the wrong bed this morning.

6. I am only seventy-five and I don』t look a day younger.

7. I base my fashion taste on what doesn』t itch.

8. The fifties were ten years of foreplay.

9. I think I am, therefore I am, I think.

10. Hope is that feeling you have that the feeling you have isn』t permanent

」當紐約已經是三點鐘的時候，倫敦還在1938年」。 Bette Midler 講的笑話，不需要什麼解釋。直譯沒有什麼不妥的。中國人聽不懂是因為不熟悉美式幽默。

2。好萊塢像是畢加索的浴室。

3。洛杉磯是72個郊區在找尋一個城市。

4。新奧爾良是世上唯一的城市當你買尼龍襪時他們想知道你的頭的大小。

5。我早上醒來的時候發現是在錯誤的床的正確一側。

6。我只有75歲，看上去不比這年輕一天。

7。我的時尚品味取決於它是否讓我發癢。

8。我五十歲的年代是10年的前戲。(不是很清楚fifties 是指他50歲還是1950年代，需進一步查證)
