有一位登徒子，想勾引一位丈夫迴流的留守女士，送了一對名貴珍珠作為見面禮。這位潔身自好的女士把禮物退回，還附上了一首非常得體而委婉的詩，令這位登徒子知難而退：
君知妾有夫，贈妾雙明珠。
感君纏綿意，系在紅羅襦。
妾家高樓連苑起，良人執戟明光里。
知君用心如日月，事夫誓擬同生死。
還君明珠雙淚垂，恨不相逢未嫁時。
（唐詩《節婦吟》）
好一句「還君明珠雙淚垂，恨不相逢未嫁時」！誠為中文裡委婉語登峰造極之作！既不讓對方難堪，又表達了自己忠貞不渝的氣節。
英語中的委婉語（euphemism），則別有另一番功能：
用來描述一些不夠高貴的職業：
1．Prostitute (妓女)：
Street-side Sexual Distribution Specialist（街邊性分配專家），Commercial sex worker（商業性性工作者）
2．Garbage collector（垃圾收集工）：
waste management expert（廢料管理專家）, sanitation engineer（環衛工程師）
3．Janitor（清潔工）：
Custodial engineer（環管工程師）
4．Store Clerk（店員）：
Product Specialist（產品專家），sales counsellor（銷售顧問）, customer service associate（客戶服務代表）
5．餐廳侍應生（waiter/waitress）:
Hospitality Representative（服務行業代表）
6．Store security guard（商場保安）:
Loss-prevention manager（防損經理）
用來描述一些難於啟齒的事物：
1． 拉肚子（diarrhea）:
Lower gastric distress （下腹部不適）
2． 便秘（constipation）:
Occasional irregularity（偶發性不正常）
3． 潤滑劑（lubricant）:
Feminine Lubricating solution（女用潤滑劑）
4． Second-hand clothing（二手舊衣服）：
Vintage apparel（古董服裝）
用來描述一些敏感或忌諱的字眼：
1． Old people（老年人）：Goldern-Agers（金色年華人士）
2． Senior Home（養老院）：Long-term-Care Facilities（長期護理機構）
3． 偷渡客（illegal worker）: Undocumented worker（未登記勞工），global market workforce（全球市場勞力）
4． Poor People（窮人）：economically-disadvantage（經濟地位不利者）
5． Slum（貧民窟）：substandard dwelling（低標準住房）

有一位耆英仙逝，其訃告寫得何其委婉：
The senior citizen passed away, so the funeral director claimed the remains of the decedent, took them to the memorial chapel and placed them in a burial container. Grieving survivors sent floral tributes to be displayed in the slumber room, where the grief coordinator conducted the viewing. Following the memorial service, the funeral coach transported the departed to the garden of remembrance where his human remains were interred in their final resting place.」
若是實話實說，無非就是：
「老傢伙翹腳了。仵工把屍體搬到殯儀館，放進棺材里。祭奠者送花圈，向遺體告別。葬禮后，靈車把棺材運到墓地，死者的遺體入土為安。」
