眾所周知，美國《獨立宣言》草稿是傑弗遜等人起草的。1776年6月28日，大陸會議（不等於美國國會）任命的一個委員會開會商議該宣言，作了少許修改，並於1776年7月2日予以宣布。大陸會議命令所有成員簽署該宣言，並於1776年8月2日開始簽署「官方」文本。後來（本人還不確知何時），「官方」將1776年7月4日定為「美國獨立日」—美國國慶日。

從上述幾個日子看，美國國慶日都與7月4日無關。更重要的是，100個美國人有99個半都不知道美國國慶日選在7月4日的來歷。

When was the Declaration of Independence　adopted?
July 4, 1776
In 1774, representatives from 12 of the 13 colonies　met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for the First　Continental Congress. Of the 13 colonies, only
Georgia was absent.

These representatives were angry　about British laws that treated them unfairly. They　began to organize an army. The Second Continental　Congress met in 1775 after fighting began between　the colonists and the British Army.

This Congress asked　Thomas Jefferson and others to write the Declaration　of Independence. When Thomas Jefferson finished　his draft of the Declaration of Independence, he took it to John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and the others　on the committee to review it. After changes were　made by the committee, the Declaration was read　to the members of the entire Congress. The purpose　of the Declaration was to announce the separation　of the colonies from England.

The Declaration of　Independence stated that if a government does not
protect the rights of the people, the people can create　a new government. For this reason, the colonists　separated from their British rulers. On July 4,　1776, the Second Continental Congress adopted the　Declaration of Independence.

回復戶人 2009-7-5 00:25: 美國《獨立宣言》1776年7月2日予以宣布，辯論，並於4日最後修改成為最後稿。雖然之後各州要獨自討論，授權簽字，而因為當時的交通不便大多州都在8月2日才簽字，但1776年7月4日被定為獨立日。
