Knowledge is one thing, virtue is another; good sense is not conscience, refinement is not humility, nor is largeness and justness of view faith. Philosophy, however, enlightened, however profound, gives no command over the passions, no influential motives, no vivifying principles. Liberal education makes not the Christian, not the Catholic, but the gentleman. It is well to be a gentleman, it is well to have a cultivated intellect, a delicate taste, a candid, equitable, dispassionate mind, a noble and courteous bearing in the conduct of life—these are the connatural qualities of a large knowledge; they are the objects of a University. I am advocating, I shall illustrate and insist upon them; but still, I repeat, they are no guarantee for sanctity or even for conscientiousness, and they may attach to the man of the world, to the profligate, to the heartless, pleasant, alas, and attractive as he shows when decked out in them. Taken by themselves, they do but seem to be what they are not; they look like virtue at a distance, but they are detected by close observers, and in the long run; and hence it is that they are popularly accused of pretense and hypocrisy, not, I repeat, from their own fault, but because their professors and their admirers persist in taking them for what they are not and are officious in arrogating for them a praise to which they have no claim. Quarry the granite rock with razors, or moor the vessle with a thread of silk, then may you hope with such keen and delicate instruments as human knowledge and human reason to contend against those giants, the passion and the pride of man.

這是一篇很美的文章。不但是文字優美---璧坐璣馳，而且咳唾成珠---議論高明。

移民加國之後第二年，帶著一顆好奇之心走進教堂 --- 用我們的話說就是緣分，用基督的語言來說就是神的召喚。我做工的餐館老闆夫妻兩個都是基督徒，他們送給我兩本聖經：一本中文，一本英文。

我們來自大陸的人過去都是無宗教的，有很多人覺得有信仰是給自己找麻煩。生活要守多少清規戒律，要受多少束縛啊！還要被人當做宗教狂人等！真是一群被洗腦的可憐蟲啊，連死後進天堂這種事兒也相信，現在的哈勃空間望遠鏡能看到最遠的距離是137億光年，有誰看見了天堂？還拉幫結夥的信，不可理喻的一群人。

然而當我走進教堂，立即就被感動了。都說音樂能感染、凈化一個人的心靈。聆聽唱詩班的演唱，從心底油然升騰起一種高潔、神聖之感。那種在神的看顧下的幸福、感恩、崇拜之情，那份神聖和莊嚴，榮耀和尊重，讓人肅然起敬……

約翰福音14：27 我留下平安給你們；我將我的平安賜給你們。我所賜的，不像世人所賜的。你們心裡不要憂愁，也不要膽怯。

據記載有這樣一個宗教改革者馬丁路德歸正的的故事：他看到羅馬書一章17節「義人必因信得生」時，他一邊讀，一邊揣摩、深思。突然間，一股無法言喻的喜樂，充滿他的心中，靈魂的重擔剎那間完全脫落。在這以前，他一直努力行善，想賺取救恩，卻始終沒有「做夠」的感覺，現在，神親自告訴他：「人得救非藉善行，乃藉信心。」羅馬書一章17節成為路德的「天堂之門」。

而日常生活中的我們每個人缺少的就是信心！
