The fact is most of the time, we, as young Chinese, are more ignorant on our history than some of the foreign scholars. That is why we only can listen to their comments rather than dispute it. I've had similiar experiences as the author. I've found the Americans or people from other countires tend to dispise others, not only Chinese, even French and English. And they believed that they know our country much more than we do, which, sometimes, proved to be the fact.
Who said Americans are ignorant on history?? They have good historical education programs. Have you seen the precious Chinese antiques in Metropolitan meseum?!
On the other side, most of us, young Chinese, are ignorant on world history. I had experience of confronting a Canadian who walking towards me with a book of "world Child abuse" book and asked me: "is it true that around a million babe girls are discarded by their parents every year in China?" I was shocked and said I've heard of it but not sure of the exact number. But I asked him if he knows that there are millions of slaves in North America? Even in Canada. He was astonished and said:" what's going on with this world?"
Oh well, my western brothers, the world is that bad. You are no better or worse than our Chinese, we are just human beings.
Don't just listen and get frustrated, try to dispute! Most of them tend to be arrogant only because they are ignorant!
Oh,something for your French professor re: Mafia. What is mafia? mafia refers to the organized crime. The most well-known mafia group are the Italians in Chicago and New Jersey, not Chinese. And these days, Paris is not only famous for its beautiful museums and romantic atmosphere, but also for its thieves. Travellers around the world are warned to be careful when they are travelling down there. Ha ! Tres Bien. So which one is better? Organized crime or thousands of street thieves? |
