This is a good story and is pretty typical. Take a look of the top grad school research department PhD student population, the majority are from non HYPMS schools
it is not surprising when HYPMS student go to PHD somewhere. But, it is big thing for non HYPMS student made to Ivy League. But, in the end, it is what you learned and able to apply that counts.
Science research is a life long journey, success or not cannot be judged by the undergrad school experience. Even grad studies in HYPMS may not ensure success later in the career.

You can say that again. As far as education is conerned, parents' responsibilities for their children come to an end at the last stop of education, i.e. their graduate school education. Further onwards, children start their career jouneys on their own, most probably without parents' financial support and life guidance. Hence, parents understandably attach great importace to their kids undergrad and later grad school admissions.
