Chinese doing good in foreign countries counts only a few million people.
Chinese doing good in China counts more than 100 times more.
Hope both doing well.

I guess that the author has not stayed in China for a while. The comparison means nothing. I have been glad to see the changes happened in China since I came to US in 1989 but fully disagree with the author's comments and conclusions.
It is true that the people's living standard in China has significantly been improved compared to 20 years ago. However, China is still a developing country and has a far distance to catch up with US. What is more, the social ethic and quality of people in China are so low that it probably will take, at least, 50 - 75 years to rebuild up. This is the most difficult challenge that China is facing today compared to US or even Japan.
You have forgotten that in China, the majority of people cannot have sercure feelings, especially, when any conflicts are raised because the government is above the law in China.
You have not mentioned that people have to be very carefull about food and drugs they buy and take.
You have not mentioned that air and water pollution problems are happening every second and in almost every city in China. The law and regulations cannot be effective to deal with these problems.
I am not as optimistic as the author about China right now. China is facing very serious fundamental problems. I do believe that Chinese people will solve these problems but It will take decades and tremendous effort.
For example, if you ask those millionaires in China if they feel safe to eat the food in restaurants or supermarkets, what would be the answer? Yes, Maybe, or not. I have been in US for 21 years and have never had problems with food.
Another difference is that in the author's words, it seems that those millionaires are so different from common people in China. Well, in US, I don't feel rich and different from common people at all (this is my true feeling!) though I have been a millionaire for 5 years.
