Well, this is actually something that I worry about, being both in the brain research and learning Buddhism.
First of all, being an insider of the neuroscience studies and with many friends specializing in psychiatry and neuoral science, I have to say that spirital experience is still not the main stream of the mordern science, and I feel what is described in the email is not that well reconginized.
Second, as a buddist, the message may be VERY misleading or WRONG. This has been my concern from the very beginging, and I talked about that several times in the past with different people. The "discovery" implies: oh yeah, want to get enlightened? want to get into Nirvana? Go get your brain vessel broken and use your right brain! (As a scientist, I know scientists can very easily think this way.)This embedded and implied message is NOT the Right View, I do not think. My concern from the very begining is that: most scientist or most people believe in material science, and I worry that buddism can be "materialized", and Nirvana just simply be described as some status of the brain. I talked with Ven Hong Qisong about this, he said, no, by putting electrodes on people's head can not make people enlightened. Ven Kong Hai says: "why does measuring my brain or meditation status matter ( that is kind of what I do in my work )? can that help stop people's suffering?"
Those are just my personal thoughts, may not be right. I have some publications and inventions about measuring brain, for example I can detect your brain response when you look at things. People use the same technology to try detecting if people are lying. And from time to time I think: maybe I can measure whether or not people are enlightened. From my scientific training I am pretty sure that the structure and the function of the brain will change as the buddism practice go deeper and deeper. However currently I am not comforatable touching this problem of combining science and buddism, so I simply separate them, and not let my science work and learning buddism mixed. Hopefully when solving this problem becomes necessary, some genius in the future can give people the Right View about this and lead people on the right way.
Thanks for sharing! I cced a couple of people on this message, who I think might be interest in this too.
