中國沙皮狗分為兩種型態：傳統中國沙皮犬（骨嘴）、混血型沙皮狗（肉嘴）。傳統中國沙皮犬在1920年代的廣東被人用作斗狗，1949年後，傳至澳門， 其後再引入香港。1960年代因斗狗活動需求，混入拳師犬、鬥牛犬、鬥牛獒、鬥牛㹴，變成為肉嘴型態，1970年代，以中國斗狗名稱傳至美國。 肉嘴型態的沙皮狗多年來被人們誤解為正宗中國沙皮狗。兩種沙皮狗的型態區別為：傳統中國沙皮犬——身型輕巧，靈活，嘴部堅實，沒有多餘皮肉；肉嘴型——皺皮布滿頭部，嘴部皮肉厚重，形似河 馬，體型肥厚。
肉嘴沙皮狗是一種寵物狗，最大特點是皮有深深的褶皺。其名字沙皮（拼音是shā pí）直譯為「Sand Skin」，不是因為其顏色，而是主要特點。當它們還小的時候，褶皺確實很多，可是長大后就消失了，似乎是身體「長到皮里去了」。這種狗直到1991年才 列入美國犬業俱樂部。
健康傳統中國沙皮犬甚小發生眼睫毛內翻癥狀，肉嘴因頭大量皺紋及遺傳，甚多眼臉內翻病症，故需特別注意.兩種型 態，它們的耳腔都會過於狹窄，因此耳部產生問題較多. 肉嘴沙皮狗不合理的近親繁殖會導致褶皺過多，使眼睫毛內翻，影響眼睛，甚至出現事故。這種情況叫做「眼瞼內翻」，可以用外科手術進行矯正（「固定」眼瞼以免刺到眼 球）。由褶皺引發的皮膚病也很常見，所以要用特殊的洗髮劑經常洗澡，免於過分乾燥和脫落。
[編輯] 歷史沙皮狗源自中國廣東省，以其好鬥和警惕出名。它們的褶皺被特意培育以提高其打鬥本領，那樣在其他狗咬住它們的褶皺時，仍可以回過身來， 反咬對方。它們曾處於滅絕邊緣，也因「世界最稀有的狗」被錄入吉尼斯世界紀錄，從那時起，沙皮狗作為家庭養狗而遍布全球，主要就 是因為它們鍾情自然。

- marnifan: 你要是領養了baby會不會送別人Never ever. Baby and family are a lot bigger responsibility than having a pet. I don't think I am ready for that yet. Benben is now in a better place though, and she is very happy with kids to play all the time. The kids' grandma is at home all the time and at some week days both kids get to stay at home too -- they hate nursery. And they have a lot bigger house and yard. So it has really worked out for everybody.

Plus I have to travel every now and then. I used to ask my neighbor to look after Benben when I was gone -- as u can imagine they were big favors and a lot of concerns on my part too. Again this has been a better solution for everybody including Benben. I am not abandoning her though, I see her at least once every two months.

- To All Non-Pet Owners Who Visit & Like to Complain About Our Pets:
1 They live here. You don't.
2. If you don' t want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. (That's why they call it "fur "niture.)
3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
4. To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and speak clearly.
Remember: In many ways, dogs and cats are better than kids because
they:
1. Eat less
2. Don't ask for money all the time
3. Are easier to train
4. Normally come when called
5. Never ask to drive the car
6. Don't hang out with drug-using friends
7. Don't smoke or drink
8. Don't have to buy the latest fashions
9. Don't want to wear your clothes
10. Don't need a "gazillion" dollars for college. And finally,
11. If they get pregnant, you can sell their children.

- marnifan: not shoe stores you arrogant ....Boutique shoe stores, may I add. Close enough anyway. You know what? I bought a few clothes this spring at sales weekends from Macy's, it was really cheap. And from that I have a better sense now how much profit department stores make from selling clothes, probably over 500% profit margin at least in their undiscounted items. I am sure you are doing just that...
